ok heres the plan. hoist the car up, slice off the rearmost muffler, weld on 2.25 inch piping all the way where it would have gone. i have an EF fairmont by the way. the 4.0 six.
so basically what i want to know is, will this improve performance, if not will it decrease. how much louder will it be. and are there any major reasons why i should not do it. also any tips on doing it would be nice. Note, i am going to do this if anybody cannot point out a major reason for not doing so, so tips such as pay for one or it doesnt look good are not really sufficient. cheers lads. itll sound better than one with the muffler there but not by much..might have a slight echo wen idling but better to find some 2.5inch pipe and weld it on...did that to a vp i used to have sounded better but not by much

the middle muffler does most of the silencing, so if you want your car to sound better i would open up the middle muffler and do some modding there.

As above, the resonator on the rear will just make it drone and sound like your typical p plater car if you pull it off.

if its free go for it, if it doesnt work its not hard to fix!
just cut the rear muffler off and see what it sounds like before you start your pipe work, that way if it doesnt sound any good you can just reweld the peice you cut off, and you dont waste your time.

lol it wont make it drone if you remove the rear muffler. I doubt there will be much difference at all in noise.... maybe you could cut out the first and second box, and weld in the smaller box before the diff, where the bigger box lived... more work for minimal gain!

I have a 2.25 cat back no name exhaust on my EB with only a centre sports muffler and it sounds very nice. So i say give it a go. Has also got a nice burble sound to it.

Are you talking about the rear muffler (ie before the diff) or the resonator? Removing the resonator in the tailpipe made my car drone like crazy and sound like a stock 4cyl with an oversize cannon on it (had to cut it off as was about to fall off due to rust). It sounded so bad I was embarrassed to drive it for the week I had to like that until I got all the bits to make my new exhaust.

Rear resonator. I dont have any resonators, only a small single muffler box before the diff and I dont get any drone. I didnt even get any drone with it dumped straight out of the muffler before the diff.

It will make it a bit louder, but not as loud as a catback with just the one muffler.
Will sound fine, won't drone, even on an auto. Will just be a bit deeper and louder. |
