Ive had to do some longer distance driving this week and i've noticed that even when im doing 100K there is a vague feeling of chugging and surging from the motor.
I'm still trying to track down the cause of the morning (and restarting) problem i have where the motor starts to hesitate and almost stall then surges like a mofo and throws me back in the seat. i believe this is also causing low power and a major flat spot around 3500rpm. but i'll settle for an answer to the highway speed surging if people have an answer.

Aux shaft?? Have you removed the dizzy, to see if any of the gears are chewed out;
A worn out TPS can cause flat spots.......

Fuel filter, injectors, TFI, dizzy, plugs, leads, coil, auxiliary shaft or even a blocked cat.
check for a blocked cat and maybe the TFI module. Check if there is any coolant leaking at the thermostat housing dropping onto the TFI causing headaches...had that happen to me which damaged my TFI causing surging at speed, under load and at one point...no acceleration. That's all I can think of... phong =P~

aux looked fine as far as i know. anyone know much about the torque control sensor in the gearbox?

Not sure if the knock sensor might cause any issues? Just a wild guess now since most, if not all, of the items you have replaced cause surging issues.
BTW, have you also checked your BBM butterfly vacuum thing. See if it opens at the correct RPM, I believe 3600RPM is when it's meant to open...so 3500 is most likely the flat spot you are encountering as the butterflies switch. Check for any loose wiring? maybe a bad connection somewhere causing havoc when running hot? Also check your throttle cable, might have seen better days and stretching a bit causing issues, or even getting stuck. phong =P~

my brothers AU is doing the same thing exactly. its f@rt until right on 3500 when it says party time. he has just had a new coil pack, leads, plugs and crank sensor installed. no fix.
Ill grab a can of carby clean and try and wash out TPS. Also will check his vacc lines for butterflies. will let you know what happens, if anything

I have an EBII Fairmont that surged at the same point of the highway every single time. Took it to Auto Leaders for computer check. No issues. On the way to work I got to the same point on the highway and presto, she surged again. What I did notice was that the temperature gauge was just below normal and dropping. (Thermostat opening) I then realised that the computer was recognizing that the water temperature was not at optimal temperature therefore dumping fuel into the thing as if it was on a manual choke. I changed the thermostat and the engine temperature was maintained better and no problem. Therefore check your temperature and replace thermostat or the coolant sensor located on the thermostat housing. Might just be your gremln.

its not anything to do with ur auto trans? if its engine related wouldnt it happen at that same rpm in any gear? try sitting at the same speed in a different gear on the highway? also ive heard similar problems from a loose knock sensor rattling about and sending the computer nuts.

I had the exact same problems, also on take off. Best way would be to put it on a dyno and see if it is lean.
For me it was the fuel pump. And it was a fualty brand new one! Not supplying enough fuel pressure. |

swapped it for a new one and no difference. i've been around the block trying to find the gremlin thats tormenting my engine block and no go.
Mid next month im sending it in to be checked over by a reputable mechanic. hopefully i'll get lucky
