Ok guys. I found the ideal product to clean carbon of the valves and cylinder's. OVEN CLEANER. put it on, leave for 20 minutes, then the carbon just wipes off, its great. Now for my newbie question: I have cylinders 1 and 6 up atm as going by my instructions which are easy to clean. What I want to know is how I would go about getting cylinder 2-5 up for cleaning. I dont wan't to screw up things such as timing etc so I need to know what precautions I should be taking etc.

I guess you've got the head off then. If the head is off and the timing chain is tied to the cam sprocket then you really don't what to go moving anything.
If your taking the timing case off then you can turn it over as much as you like, then put the timing marks back in place afterwards.

Is over cleaner safe? It's highly caustic, will do a great job of eating alloy.

oven cleaner is an acid...what its meant to do is take a thin layer of the alloy off which makes it look clean
so, although it looks and IS clean, what youve actually done is created a small clearance with the valves, thus you loosing compression = power

Don't know to many people who like their rings eaten out,
you would have better off using alloy wheel cleaner, nowhere near as abrasive and will not attack the metal.

ok, with the piston, i only tried a small circle in the top right of the centre and will take advice not to use it out of risk of losing my rings. Also, the head seems to be fine and its surface is as level as it was when it came out. Still need to pickup gasket remover though.

A lot of new oven cleaners are not caustic. To many problems with housewives getting their hands burn't by not following the directions, I guess.
