I cleaned it all off with oven degreaser. Probably shouldn't have (because its strong s**t) but it didn't seem to effect my head.

make a caustic mix of ordinary caustic soda available from the supermarket cleaning aisle and boiling water. Wear eye and skin protection.

this s**t will move anything and left all my collets, retainers and springs looking like new!

I've got a wire brush on my bench grinder... Got one for the drill aswell, polishes them up nicely.
You're obviously doing a head gasket? DO NOT clean the tops of your pistons whatever you do.

Hi Walker
Are you saying do not clean the tops of the pistons at all ??
Or just don't use a wire brush attachment on them ??
Thanks

The carbon on the pistons actually seals them, clean it off and you'll have to rebuild it or fill it with oil every week lol.

Oh ok i didnt know that. i thought thats what the rings were for. sorry not being a smart a***. but i dont see how that can be the case? i admit i dont fully know the ins and outs but based on your theory wouldnt a new motor be no good then? i dont understand how carbon on top of a piston can "seal" it? sory if i apear horibly Naieve

On a newer tighter engine it's not so bad, as they wear they become loose, as silly as it sounds it does actually seal them.

sorry mate that makes no sence at all. carbon on top of the pistons does nothing to 'seal' anything.

in some cases carbon behind the rings and help to keep the rings against the bore

Well mate, go clean the carbon off the top and put the head back on and see what happens.
I've seen it happen more than once.

I can't remember exactly why as i've been out of the car game for a while, forgotten a lot... But it's a definate NO NO to clean them, they start to blow by.

i have done it many times, my own engines included, and many of them regular customers, none have had a problem after.

the extra compression from shaving the head can cause dramas but cleaning the TOP of the piston (wich never seals against anything and never touches anything) will not effect the piston rings sealing ability.

by you reasoning running a carbon clean or as some people do using water in the intake to remove carbon building should cause the same problem but it doesn't.

i really would expect better then a post like that from a mod
