anyone got any tips? ... mine's looking a bit grotty and i can't see the water level, like most all of them i bet, new one costs well over $100 which is a bit expensive for a plastic bottle i reckon, so cleaning the old one is the go
have got to do a cooling system flush and radiator rod out soon so nows the time to do it was thinking of a bit of HCL rinsed around inside it maybe, tho perhaps caustic might be better for cleaning, my other bright idea was bleach which cleans most anything anyone got any solutions that have worked for them? |

Like dddp, i would like to clean the expansion tank when i flush the radiator and block after replacing my water pump.
A few things have been mentioned in this post like HCL (don't know what it is as i have never heard of it), bicarb n water, and good 'ol CLR. In the past i have also heard coke (the drink that is) is good at cleaning such things. Who has tried these and what was the result - do any of them work well ? My experiance with those cans of radiator flush fluid is that they are crap and don't work for baked on crud as you get on a not so well maintained car. If they did, the expansion tank would also come up clean ! So can any of the above items also be used to clean the block and inside of the hoses by running them in the water before flushing ? Cheers. |

HCL= hydrochrolic acid Caustic, keep it away from aluminium, good for cleaning tho, make sure you don't get any of either one of these two on your skin or in your eyes when you're using the stuff i don't think you can clean your block out at home like they can professionally, you'd need an adaptor to hook up an air compressor to get some air into the flushing water to try getting the crud out |

i wouldnt reccomend using anything harsh to clean the plastic tank..... corrosives, solvents, etc can weaken the structure of the plastic, which will mean you'll be replacing the tank sooner rather than later if it bulges or blows out

Even after cleaning it the plastic will still be foggy, they go this way after a few years. The only way to get them to look new is to buy a new one. If you just want to get it clean then first remove it from the car and flush it out with C.L.R and then rinse out throughly. Or you could try a mild detergent.
I wouldn't be using something like HCL or caustic soda as the chance of having some remain in the tank afterwards is to great.

Fill it up with some sand and water. Shake heavily for several minutes. Rince out.
