Hey lads, The bulb in my oddometer blew, so i went and replaced it, When driving around with the headlights off the oddometer is lit up but still kinda dull, then with the headlights turned on the oddometer goes so dim u cant even see it, not even at night time, Now its a GLI so theres no cluster dimmer switch, could I get a higher watt bulb would this fix the prob or would the dimness be cause by somthing else?
Thanks lads.

I asked for a Bulb for a 1996 EF falcon oddometer, he gave me one didnt have writing on it, but looks identical from the one that came out.

Sounds like a dud bulb, they're only a very low wattage anyway.
I always fit the bulb and turn the ignition on to check everything before i install the cluster. |

The original is a 3 watt clear bulb but most places will give you a 2 watt (which is still OK). Its not a blue one is it? as that will not work with the orange filter in the LCD.

Yeah I checked before putting everything back in, hope its a dud bulb, you turn the ignition on then fire up the headlights, all of the other displays stay bright but the oddometer basicly turns off, u can just see it if you look close at it and squint, Im gonna get a new bulb and cup for it today and see if that helps.

There is dimming on the LCD when the lights are on, it would make it hard to see during the day. You mentioned in another thread about an LED, did you install or try to install that? If so you might have killed a trace on the cluster if you got it around the wrong way.

Yes , but it won't work the other way around, I retract the damaged trace comment as it would have an internal resistor to limit current anyway. Are you using the LED or normal bulb?

The bulb sits in a little white cup, that has 2 metal arms coming off both sides, i noticed that these arms looked twisted and not straight, could this be the prob?

Bulb would be the best, the LED would most likely require a filter change.

Those little tabs are meant to be twisted, but you might have a bad connection.
The tabs that are against the plastic holder, just bend them up slightly so they just sit above the face, then bend the 2 top ones down, only a little to make sure she contacts. With an LED it has to go in the right way, when fitting them i'd check each one as they went in. In saying that, i often get dud bulbs in the small ones. |
