The coil does need to be earthed, and earthed good. Be sure to remove any paint from the area you plan to mount the coil. It gets its earth from one of the bolt holes - not sure which one, but a meter from the spark plug hole to the bolt hole will tell all!

The coil does not need to be earthed. If it had a circuit to earth, it wouldn't work. You can get those connectors from Repco or an auto sparky. You'd be lookin at about $7 to $10.

My mistake - I was thinking of the TFI module.

MIght just be easier to cut and extend the wires. I know you might want to maintain the original loom, but soldering and extending it would be a much better connection.
PS. Was just looking at some old schematics, and some coils are earthed according to the diagrams. These look like the old can style versions.

Get an injector plug from the wreckers, and gut an old coil or injector plug for the other end.

If you have a grinder with a 1mm disc, just cut the plug off the old coil, leaving plenty of meat so you can expose the terminals with further cutting.
