pain in the a** if u ask me and they are bolts not screws!

if u have a 3/8th drive socket set with about 1ft + of extension bars and a uni joint it will easy as u can undo the bolts from above the intake mani

What about doing the coil pack mod? (3 normal coils) How much is a coil pack compared to 3 ford spec coils?

You'll probably save later on if it happens again. Thats the way i'll be going if (when!) mine fails :P

I've read and seen pics of some EF owners who have replaced the single couil pack with 3 (or is it 6?) individual coil packs, and mounted them near the shockie tower. I thought the mod was on here somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I also wanted to know if it was 3 or 6 coils required, as if its only 3, you'd need to insulate the base of the coils, and connect the extra male plug to that base, or the wasted spark principle wouldn't work. Might even be painfull ;-)

Still searching for the mod.

repair manual says screws, i thought they were bolts.

done one on an au was pretty easy, did have access to a hoist though.

I replaced mine, are 10mm bolts, i replaced mine with AU coil pack, both Bosch, but AU one is evidently better, and wasnt much difference in price.

I'm pretty sure its only 3 conventional coils, just wired different. 2 cylinders spark at the same time when each one fires, but one spark is wasted each firing (probably the one that is TDC on exhaust stroke, so it has no effect) The trade off would be cooler individual coils, and longer dwell time, but the output spark power is halved, as each side of the coil outputs goes to an individual plug, and they meet in the middle at engine earth. Each coil in the 3 pack has to generate a spark that needs to travel across 2 gaps at the same time, so I have my doubts as to how efficient this system is. Seems to mean that if you have one faulty spark plug, it will affect its partner plug on the same associated coil.
