Howdy guys, would appreciate any information, tips, etc. that you can offer for when I have a go at servicing my car after not having seen it in more than a year. My mum and dad used it quite a bit when they were back in Aus late last year, so it'll be about 6 months since it's been driven. I want to try and service it and actually take it for a drive when I'm up in Yeppoon visiting my grandma. I am hoping that the tyres aren't horrible cracked or something because if I put air in them and they deflate I probably won't be going anywhere. I want to replace: - Oil - Oil Filter - Fuel - Fuel filter - Coolant - Air filter (clean it) - Battery - Drive belt Note I'll be doing this on a property and hopefully all the tools I used to use for such servicing are still in the boot of the car. So tell me, what do I need to watch for, what am I forgetting, etc.? O and I have no idea how to drain the fuel from the car and if that is even a good idea after it has been sitting for that long. sounds like you've got it covered, if the tank isn't too full, just give it a fill up with some fresh stuff and it should be OK.
Just check brakes for any fluid loss enjoy!

meh, its only been 6 months... leave the fuel in it, just use it up and dont thrash it.
Replace the air filter, don't clean it they're only about $16 Replace brake fluid if your capable. Pump Tyres to around 32psi, and then go higher if you like after a 50k's or so.

Krytox I meant to say that it's a K & N filter but I forgot the name until just now. I still have the clean and re-grease kit for it. That's cool for just a clean yeah? Brake fluid is definately beyond me unfortunately. That involves bleeding the system yeah? 32psi eh, noted. Thanks Fairlane, good to hear it's okay to use remaining fuel but should I change the fuel filter ya think? Does that laughing smiley face mean that some kind of comedic error will play out on my part? lol.

Actually before I saw your laugh smiley I was thinking I need a big stick or something incase the bonnet struts are stuffed and the bonnet crushes me inside the bay. Yeah I've changed fuel filter once before. Got a bit messy and took a few moments to figure out which way to actually remove once loosened, but I can do it.

You've pretty much covered it all. Just pay extra care with the brakes. They should be fine.
With the fuel just run a full tank then change the filter. Don't put injector cleaner or octane booster in it. |

Petrol has a life of 6 weeks so id definatly be dropping the petrol and also drop the oil before u start it and just throw in some cheap stuff and leave the oil filter and oil absorbs miosture over time.
Also warm it up and cool it down properly the first time round and then do a check for oil leaks and so on. U may find that u will have a little humb in ur tyres from the car sitting for so long and u will notice it when u drive so nect time if the car is gona be kept in the same position, just keep the car of stands suspended in air

Do you mean empty the oil but use the old oil filter to catch the crap and then put good oil in and a new filter? Yeah I guess I'll have to look into some stands for it.

You can drain the fuel out by unplugging the fuel line before it gets into the fuel rail and just turn the key to on. The fuel pump will just do the work for you . You can also remove the fuel filter and do it from there...that way you can change the fuel filter at the same time. Just got to try and catch all of the fuel coming out.
