Hey guys, wondering how much it would cost to swap my auto for a 5 speed manual?
i would be doing it myself over 8 months and probably rebuilding my engine at the same time.. whats a rough figure on how much it would cost? |

mine set me back $750 for EVERYTHING except fluid. box was rebuilt 50,000 ago and it was a 2 month old clutch. i am still using auto ecu, but am using the manual pedal box.
if you are good with the tools and dont have too much trouble with the starter motor (can either take 10 mins or 3 hours) it shouldnt take much more than 8 hours. mine was done full changover in a little over 5 hours but the pedal box was put in the week before (45mins) |

i did my full conversion for 400 bucks. but its dodgy, depends how u want to do it..
my car is stock, so i just put stock everything into my car. would have set me back upto 1k if i had bought a decent clutch, got the flywheel machined and all the other little fidley bits.

heh, i sold a T5 gearbox last week for $170.
you can get parts cheap, but the usual cost for a working t5 (cond. unknown is about 650) plus parts. a lot of people buy a wrecked ea-ed and take the bits.

i got my conversion fro 550...and sold unwanted parts as well as the auto to make my total conversion cost 50 bucks (not including fluids and other nick nacks).
Look around and you will find something cheap and worth it. phong =P~

do people think its worth paying $2800 for a mal wood conversion? (included rebuilt or new everything and fitting)
I could do it myself but considering it has safety implications im not sure if i trust myself. Plus the idea of everything being in fresh condition is nice

Plus the idea of everything being in fresh condition is nice hmmm if everything in reconditioned with brand spanking new clutch assembly and the lot (ECU as well?) then i guess it isn't too bad since it is fitted. If you do want to do it yourself, you can buy a reconditioned T5 box for $500 according to some guy on fordforums.com. new clutch assembly will set you back about 500 and also bits and pieces... in the end you will save yourself about $1000 if you do it yourself. phong =P~

No, providing you use OEM equipment. However I don't think you even need one when using a Dellow or CRS conversion for usage with other brand boxes. As long as you do not modify the structure of the car reinforce it.

As krytox said, no need for engineering certificate...just tell your insurance company and also VicRoads (or your equivalent) about the change and all should be sweet...sometimes your insurance company may not cover it if they want to be an a** about it...so check before you start. phong =P~

a cop pulled me over for booting it the night i finished the conversion. questioned me why i had no centre console and a big gearstick sticking out of the floor and wires n stuff everywhere.. i was just like "i just changed it to manual, and im having trouble with when to change gears, sorry if i was going a bit quick" he told me i need to book it into the pits and get them to give me an ok to the conversion saying it was all done properly but i just went to the rego place and told them they made a mistake and my car was manual, but it said auto on the papers, they changed it for me too easy

Johnno, best piece of advice here, wait it out/buy a wreck, reason why?
I used to enquire about every T5 there was for sale, box alone was always creeping over $500, and then then ive gotta get everything else. I gave it time, my cousin liked my car, bought one identical, even same paint code, but factory manual, he cleaned the car up lightly into a lexus, sold the car to me for $200, ive now got everything for conversion. Damage is fairly minimal, but would cost abit to fix, hence wrecking it. I originally only wanted the car for the doors and bits, my auto suited me fine, and yea, would have sold it to you for dirt, but yea, auto decided to throw the towel in, so T5 time.......also get a spare motor So yea, also scored boot lid, spare all 4 doors, interior, diff, brakes..........$200. so yea. no real set price mate, seen full conversions on ebay for about $600, but depends howlong you can wait, a good deal will throw itself at you.
