 Just curious-is 50% too much.
Book says 33% min but does not mention Maximum! Whats the limit 100%????????

some coolants come pre made to be put in 100% straight... -as in DONT ADD WATER!.. so 100% must be ok..

Here's some information I dug up:
"Antifreeze, when mixed at a 50/50 ratio with water, provides excellent anti-freeze, anti-boil, and anti-corrosive properties. In extremely cold environments, the ratio for standard ethylene glycol can go as high as 70% antifreeze, 30% water. All coolants must be diluted with water at the proper ratios and should not be used full-strength. Full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water." Just put in what the directions say, e.g. 50ml coolant to every 1L of water.
I always put just a tiny bit more in just to make sure I don't undertreat.

I started running a 50% ratio mainly because of towing, it worked so well I've kept it at that.
As stated, 30% is a minimum and 70% is for really extreme conditions, so 50% seemed a good compromise and has given me no problems. When towing a car trailer or similar load in summer, I'd say it's saved me a quite few problems, especially before I replaced the clutch fan with thermos. Staying overnight in the high country in winter [below freezing] has never resulted in frozen coolant either but that's in NSW, not the Antarctic. LOL Cheers, Paul

I moved to high country recently and it was one of the first things mentioned to me. I think someone said minus 25deg can happen. I was already prepared. I am told cracked heads can happen after a few cold nights in a row. We had our first frost at least 6 weeks ago, it was a good 5mm thick, with beautiful ice crystal patterns on the car. Don't throw hot water on the windscreen to clear it, a bucket of cold or slightly warm water is the go i am told, or wait till the sun does it. The garden hose won't work. A bit of metho in the wiper washer fluid i am told helps there.
In countries like Alaska i hear they keep the engines warm overnight, sometimes they have quick fittings to allow for circulating the oil through a heater, and they use 10 grade oil or less to keep it flowing.

use 50% its the best ratio and as i work at ford its what we recomend

hen using Ethylene Glycol, don't exceed 68%. After this point, it will not extract heat properly.
