Hi, There is coolant coming from our NL Fairlane's overflow tank. This happens as soon as I've stopped driving. There is no loss in performance and the temp stays normal. It's dome under 100,000. Could it be that the head gasket is gone and cooling system is being pressurised as the overflow tank fills to the top. Or could there be a less sinister problem? If its a gasket, does anyone know of someone who could do the repair before Xmas here in the ACT as we are off towing a van on the 26th. Thanks ....... Nick |

check the coolant level when it's cold, it could just be that the surge tank was too full and you've driven it on a day hot enough to push the excess out
as for the head gasket, check the oil and make sure it's not a creamy brown colour, it should be somewhere between a clear brown and black also, when its cold, start it up and see if any bubbles appear in the coolant in the surge tank

hmm this always happens to me whne i change my coolant, but i think thats caus i dont get the air locks out, have you changed ures recently?

no - a week ago the low coolant light went on - filled it up to the recommended level. I'm going to my radiator expert in the morning, depending on what he says it may be off to ford mechanic.
I few weeks ago one of the leads developed an intermitent fault ie loss of spark to one cylinder - maybe this has done something to the gasket. I understand detonation can damage a head gasket - whether a dud lead could do the same??? |

ID put my money on it being just a little overfuilled as its not uncommon for some coolant to overflow when stopping if its been topped up or serviced in the recent past..

Only fill in between min and max when cold. Make sure you bleed all air. Make sure cap is fine (just get a new one).

yep instead of assuming the worts i would be checking all the minor things first.
i've had a cracked radiator once and recently the hedder tank or overflow tank had a crack in it loosing coolant.

Have you checked the cap seal on the tank? its prob only that as i found with my EL, after doing the head and was loosing water still. but there was water seeping onto the exaust manifold!

Took the NL to my radiator specialist this morning. He informs that after turning off the engine and if the radiator is partialy bocked pressure can build up , and when the cap seal is slightly raised a rush of coolant can follow. We replaced the standard radiator with a two row job albeit the size of the tubes are much larger than the standard unit. A three row one would suit regular towing. Result: no more coolant loss. It seems these Ford radiators ae prone to clogging. Residual factory head casting sand can take years to disapear and aids in blocking the radiator. I'm informed that from AU on the problem has been fixed. Thanks for your help fellow fordmods. |
