basically my car is losing coolant, not a s**t load, but i would like it to lose none. i have never replaced my coolant and i have had the car for nearly 2 years, i have just toped it up like 3 times, would replacing it fix it.
how do i change it, where does it empty from, whats the best coolant to use? is there anything that is a common problem that could be wrong with it, any suggestiogn of what to do, should i replace the coolant or not waste my money if its just going to run out again. |

Either you have a small leak somewhere or u have a small head gasket leak.For a quick fix drain your coolant and replace with new stuff and put in some coolant stop leak,you can get it from most automotive stores.

Sounds like a head gasket, if not(most likely is) check the water pump and even the thermostat housing for a leak.
They are very common.

Could be the head being warped, that what happen to me,
check ya oil and see if you can see coolant in it.

i had the same thing happen to me, slow leak with some top ups over time, until one day i saw a damp patch and popped the bonnet to see that i had no coolant whatsoever. Mine turned out to be a cracked end tank in the radiator. hopefully yours is not too bad either
Just got new radiator and hoses and everythings fine. Have a look around the radiator and hose connections, also after a drive have a look at the plastic air diffuser under the radiator and see if you can spot some damp patches.

well, everyone has told u to check for leaks.....well der!!!!!
Drain you coolant.....clean engine thoroughly....then run coolant throu radiator...make sure its got the green dye throu it.....let car run up to normal temp....then just look for the green dye in engine bay....would be easiest and cheapest.... otherwise pay a mechanic to do the same....

1st thing check for obvious leaks, take for a good drive and park on cement and turn off engine, park ya butt at the front of the car and see if there are any drips and where they are coming from if any seen
2nd check coolant bottle cap, these have been known to be suspect and can loose water while you are driving around. 3rd if none of the above are obvious, check exhaust after the car has been for a drive and is at normal temp, and check exhaust for water vaper, if present possible blown head gasket, can confirm with compression check

They are very common. I agree, Head gasket is very likely. I had this twice on my EL. small coolant leak externally. Last time it was on the exhaust side under #4. There was no sign of coolant on the ground as it would leak onto exhaust and evaporate. Only found it after removing heat shield. Changing the coolant wont fix the problem. First find the leak and fix it. Then change your coolant. Don't use products such as chemiweld to fix leaks. They clog up radiators.

everyone seems to think that the only reason you may loose coolant is a blown head gasket.
while this is a fairly likely candidate its not the only thing that they are prone for. As was suggested by AU99 you need to drive it to build up a bit of pressure and watch it for any leaks. even if you have to get in there and look, check the welsh plugs on the side of the block, these are not uncommon to corrode and leak. Hopefully it is just something small, split hose, expansion tank or cap. Hope this helps rather than hinders and annoys Good luck with it.

heater taps can be buggers too, cos they are tucked under the inlet manifold they can leak and you cant see it.
unfortunatly there are alot of little things tucked under there and they can be a pain in the a*** to find, and if its only a small leak only makes it harder. but I have heard of coolant bottle caps being suspect by a few members on here too, so maybe if cheap enough maybe a good place to start and replace it. as they say start with the easiest and cheapest things first before messing with the expensive stuff

Other leaks tend to leaves signs. zxodus to check if you are loosing coolant out of the cap. Put a small coke bottle over the header tank overflow hose. Make sure you attach the bottle to something so it wont move. After a few drives see if any coolant is in the bottle. If so replace the cap.

Had the same problem with my EB....
Fixed by tightening one of the hose clamps. That was all. |

I had a leak too. I fixed it by replacing the clamps on all the major hoses.
The one that leaked for me was the mid size hose from the bottom of the surge tank. It leaked on the outboard side of the hose so I never saw it. But I pulled it off in a search for the leak and I found the little bastard. |

If it is a head gasket and it is only a small leak, try running some chemi-weld through the radiator....its only about 7bucks for a bottle from super cheap auto....it fixed the head gasket in my ea for about a year.
