Okay I have a bit of a query and I didn't know what section to put this in as its a bit random but here goes...
Why do coolant tanks go from this: To this: Within a few months? The first one was a brand newie and it basically looks like the 20 year old one in the second picture in maybe eight months or so (It hasn't actually gone that bad, I just don't have a current picture but its not that great) Can it be prevented or cleaned? Its on the inside of the tank as I clean the outside often enough. Any info would be great Cheers, Luke

Heat cycles. Chemicals in the coolent.
Gunge and crap in the cooling system. Not much you can do about it unless you get a PWR alloy one.

Based on that fact my Mum is the best around! |

You can go the cheaper alternative and make a cover out of aluminium around the stock one. Regarding coolant level indicator, you can make a slit window somewhere on the back using perspex on the back.

The "coolant" after being cycled through heating and cooling a few hundred times, gradually turns into an acid. Hence the destruction of alloy heads etc., and the discolouration of the bottle. By changing every 18 to 24 months, the problem is solved, eh cjh??
(Good quality collant helps too) |

(Good quality collant helps too) I use Repco Inhibitor Concentrate, 2 bottles makes 20 litres...it isn't anti-freeze/anti-boil, just inhibitor, and I put the 2 bottles in the system, and leave it at that. Haven't had a problem with it. Just remember, if you haven't a clue as to what inhibitor you have in the system, do a chemical flush....and follow the instructions on the bottle. I use Loctite Radiator cleaner when i'm doing that to someone else's car.

Haven't had a problem with it. use the Nulon stuff, again no problems. As I said: good quality stuff. My suggestion EF Wannabe, is to flush the system, get a new coolant tank off Fleabay, and put in quality stuff. |

A good way to de scale the system is to use bicarbonate of soda which will clean the scale off the interior of the cooling system. I couldn't see through my coolant reservoir but after the bicarb I could actually see the coolant level. Cheaper than the poop you buy from supercrap/ripco and won't damage internals. You have to flush the system well though as the carbonate will calcify if left in the system for any length of time.
The other method I used to get the reservoir clean was a mag wheel brush and a chux through the top and bottom hose holes. The chux you throw in the reservoir with some pebbles(small ones and and fill to a third full) and then shake the crap out of it. I add some ct18 as well and shake, do something else, shake, leave, shake, finish beer, empty, put in sink of water and detergent. Flush and reinstall. Bit of d**k around but works well. Hooroo |
