Hi all...
I have noticed ive been starting to drop coolant mid way down the car at first, when you start the car (while warm) a large puddle forms approx 10cm in diameter then it constantly drips a small drop from two points on the transmission every couple of minutes. In july i had the heater core replaced after i punched the car down the M4 @ 140km/h and was sprayed by boiling coolant. This was all well and good, $800 later i had a heater again. then lately i have noticed when the aircon is in the heat selection i could smell a small faint smell of coolant. I thought it may have just been some residue or condensation built up on the fins the more and more i have been able t smell it stronger and not only on the hot setting either. I have checked inside the cabin and there are no internal leaks. could it be the core again just leaking down into the air conditioner condensation drain or something else. The Transmission is a sealed box isnt it.. no coolant runs into there??? i just cant think of any other way that coolant would get so far back in the car. The core has a 12 month warranty. if it was the core again, would the assosiated labour and parts be covered? any ideas..? excuse any typing errors.. im in the dark with only my screen to light me up |

there is the steel heater hose pipe that runs around the rear of the head(maybe rusted)
there is a welch plug at the back on the block between the engine and gear box that can rust out.. if you can still smell coolant from the heater/aircon maybe the heater core has gone again?? |

Doubt it would be one of the steel heater pipes.. they are thick mild steel and the car is only 5 years old.
I checked the welsh plug on the head and the head gasket and both are fine.( did end up dropping the mirror i was using it and breaking it) Couldnt see the bottom welsh plugs I just seems coincidental that the heater smells and that leak is happening at the same time really. the coolant bottle had dropped a bit in the past week.. |

FYI the smell is on both circulated and outside air setting on the aircon

yea as any air that runs through the heaterbox will pick up the coolant smell if its leaking in the heater box...
i changed a heater core in my last car to have it fail again 12 months later.. really sux if it is.. |

Hi all. I bought a Falcon with this problem. The previous owner had spent a lot of money trying to fix it but failed and after he cooked the motor several times, gave up. I pulled the motor out and only after separating the motor and box and removing the drive plate (brand new) did I find that the rear welsh plug (in the block) had become severely corroded, dropping coolant between the motor and gearbox. I have no idea what the mechanic who replaced the auto, drive plate and converter was thinking but he completely missed it. I still don't understand what Ford is doing fitting steel welsh plugs when the brass ones are not much more expensive and last ten times as long.

im sorry but i think your radiator has failed and leaking coolant into your transmission the fluid will flow through the breather hole in the transmission....
your going to thave to replace your radiator, and service your transmission immediatly.... or get a mechanic to check and make sure your head gasket is ok

if the transmission has got water in it then its to late already
once water hits the clutch plates in a auto it peels the lining of them and it is only a matter of time before it will start to play up |
