Hey all,

Woke up this morning and had to move my car so the olds could get out of the garage. After i moved it i noticed the usual power steering fluid BUT now ive got a coolant leak!!

I have found where its coming from Under the power steering pump coming from the junction of the bottom radiator hose and what looks to be a heater pipe. (Pics below)

Question is, how do i fix it. It looks as if the rubber seal may be rooted but im unsure. Any help greatly appreciated.

there is a O ring in there.

how old is the water pump? it has to come off to replace that o ring so may as well change the pump while u are at it

I'd say for a temporary fix, just get a bit of stop leak from supercheap or autobarn.

But, probably take the water pump off and repair it. I think it might be loctite that holds and seals that pipe. So just seal it up a bit better, or if it's a rubber seal it's as simple as buying that seal and giving it a go.

ive had the car for 3 years and havent done the water pump. my guess is its factory or close to.

how big of a job is it to change?

You dont have to remove the water pump to replace the oring. All you have to do is undo the 19mm bell housing bolt around 3 turns. There is a clamp held there, or if it have been relplaced before there probabaly inst one there anymore. (most people dont put them back). Then undo the 13mm bolt to the by pass hose directly under the exhaust manifold at about cylinder2 (sometimes there are two bolts, the other at around cylinder 5). Then get a large pry par and leaver on the bell housing where you undid the bolt and leaver back the bypass pipe. You only have to leaver it back about 50mm. Then replace your oring and put a bit of sealant around the oring and put it back in (careful not to pinch the oring on the housing pushing it back in). HINT: have car cold and radiator cap on, then you will only loose about 1/2 litre coolant, if you undo radiator cap you loose the whol lot!!

would it hurt to replace the whole water pump? While its leaking my thoughts are to replace the whole thing. A lot of the engine auxiliaries look to be from factory so it really couldnt hurt.

Anyone know the run down on a complete pump replacement? (i know get a gregorys)

Pump replacement is prety straight forward.
-Remove thermo fans,
-remove drivebelt
-drain coolant
-Undo bottom hose from water pump
-undo the 5 (I think) bolts to water pump
-give a wriggle or tap and off it comes
-Clean up block with a razor blade and remove all the gasket

either buy a water pump with a pulley on it or use a special pump pulley remover tool to remove pulley from old pump

personally i would replace the pulley. they can be easily pressed on with a workshop press. If not you can very carefully press it on using a vise (be very careful as impeller is very brittle!)

Install new water pump oring and small amount of sealant on oring. Use (permatex or small amount of salastic on new w/pump paper seal.

-Do up bolts evenly
-Make sure bolts are pretty tight
-Add coolant
-Bleed system
-Pressure test for no leaks

SHould be all ok
(Hint: you may have to undo brace bar from alternator to power steering bracket)

same thing happened to me i drained the colant half way and pulled the pipe up and silicone it tight so theres no chance of it leaking now its all good

silicon wont stop it leaking, if the leak is bad... there is no way silicon will hold 14 lb of pressure... do it properly and replace the o-ring, else it could get expensive

agreed. replacement pump wise any brands to look for? I see ones on ebay but should i be looking for a specific brand?

your alternator won't last long with pwr steering fluid dripping on it.

I had a slight weap of coolant out of that same pipe, I just put some blue goo around it. been good now for 3yrs/70000km touch wood.

yeh mine just s**t an alternator because it was pissing out p steer fluid. i did the p steer pump a few months back though

hah yeah alternator is nearly gone too. Im gunna end up having to do all 3 at once me thinks. Ive gotta find out exactly where the power steering is leaking from. i think the HP hose may need doing too.
