hi, my 96EF has started leaking coolant but its difficult to figure out weather its from a hose or somewhere else.
Coolant is leaking under the drive belt area between AC and one other pulley. And it leaks frequently, not drop by drop. Any help ??? cheers. |

May only be a hose clamp, try tightening all the clamps first. Could be simple.

hope its just a hose clamp, if thats a thermostat case then is it OK to drive the car? just short distance to work. any possibility of gasket? coz i was searching the forums and most of them are concerned with gasket. |

Best thing to do is get your hands dirty.
Just try looking for the source of the leak. No coolant goes throught the front of the head. So it could be thermostat or hose clamp (hopefully). If it is the head gasket, it would be leaking from the side of the head under the intake manifold.

The t'stat side housing gasket is a good bet. Ford changed from paper to tin for those gaskets. Also can try tightening the hose clamps.

oil galleries on the inlet,
water galleries on the exhaust. only thermostat carries external water on the inlet side. (besides pipes) As these cars are 10+ yrs old, its a good idea to replace all the rubber hoses. I've found the short heater hose going towards the heater tap does perish and is often overlooked. Replace the whole lot and and know its done right it'll only cost about $70 tops and thats Including the firewall heater hoses (expensive ones). And if you think thats heaps... pleh.. 5+yrs of reliability. and MAY save your engine! most of us spend that a week in fuel!

Also keep an eye on the sensor under the thermostat it could be leaking under there, be carefull when hot, these brake easy when undoing/tightening
Also the steel pipe below it, this uses an o-ring, most likey siezed on and ok, but worth a look. thermostat housings are around $30 if you need a new one but lets hope not!
