Hoi guys,

As I left work today that little fan inside the box icon came up on the cluster, so I pulled over and checked my coolant and it was halfway between full and low, so what gives with that? Also the hose that goes from the coolant champer to the engine has a little bit of coolant at the top of it (where the plastic of the champer and the hose come together). Have that even after the fag that serviced my car pulled off the hose that was leaking at that connecting, cleaned the hose up and put a good secure thing on it (worm something?).

So yeah, should I be worried? The icon was basically on the whole time I used the M1 (freeway) home.

I've only ever had the coolant light come on once, and that was when there was no coolant is overflow (plastic bit in engine), so i would say your sensor is shot. As for hose I would replace it if its leaking ANY coolant, they start small and soon become bigger leaks. Take it to a radiator place and get them to presure test system to see how the radiator is really going.

I wouldn't be to concered if coolant level is at half way (check it when engine is cold), sound like a dodgey sensor.

If the hose on the top of the header tank has a slight leak, you can try this.
Disconnect hose from top of header tank. Making sure first that it is long enough, trim 20mm from end of hose. Replace hose clamp, preferably with a new one. then reconnect hose to tank.

If its too short to do the above you will need to buy a new hose.

As the coolant level was higher than the low mark, I agree with the others the coolant sensor is likely to be the problem. The sensor usually just needs removing from the tank and given a good clean.

The poblem with the coolant level sensors in the overflow tank is that the float (clear plastic) becomes brittle and cracks over time.

The float then fills up with coolant and sinks closing the reed relay inside the sensor (black plastic) body which lights up the dash warning lamp.

Unfortunately ford does not sell the float on its own forcing you have to buy the whole sensor at ~$50 when only the float and possibly the grommet needs changing - but that's 'fraud' for you :)

Some simply remove the sensor and zip tie the float to the sensor body before refitting it but obviously you loose the coolant level warning function until you replae the sensor and/or float.

Cheers

And there fairly cheap to, got a price on one 6 months ago from Ford here with sensor was under $100 for the part. Shouldn't be hard to fit.
