I need to replace the coolant level sensor on my EL.
Anyone know exactly how i would go about doing this? After a visual inspection, it seems that the sensor is somehow fixed in the coolant surge tank. Im sure it is possible to remove, but i just dont know how. Any info would be great. Thanks |

Useing a pair of pointed nose pliers. Spread the pliers so that each point goes into a hole in the white ring. Then turn the pliers anti-clockwise.
Once loose the ring can be unscrewed and removed. The sensor will just pull out.

Also the sensor can be fixed most times rather than replacing them. The princilpe is that they have a hollow float to which a magnet is attached(imbedded). When the float rises the magnet closes a switch in the black housing.
What happens is that the float becomes porous and water gets in. Simply prick a small hole in the float an drain the water (the float is easily removed). Allow to dry fully. Get some epoxy glue and mix it up. Smear the glue all around the float to reseal it completely. Try and keep clear of the magnet. Do a second coat if you are worried. Let it all dry and then reassemble. Make sure the magnet gets close the the black housing (if necessary sand off some of the glue). All fixed for about $8.

you should go buy a new sensor from ford for about $60 to keep good guys (not unlike me) in a job

I got the whole resevoir and sensor for only $90 from ford and now it's shiny and green again.

I have the leaky float syndrome and found that my Arlec 125mm angle grinder service tool is the exact fit to remove the float sensor.

You may find the magnet does get gunk on it, so giving it a good clean usually does wonders also.

Getting the screw-in ring off was the easy part!
I have had some long running coolant loss for the last month or two so this weekend I thought I'd go and pull the sensor out and (by sticking my finger in the opening and feeling around) I have left behind the float +magnet and some sort of black plastic ring which has probably snapped of somewhere inside. This ring or collar is too big to fish out with my finger thru the hole, its just floating around inside now along with the float. I tried to be gentle but it just didnt want to come out without a bit of muscle but its all so old I guess its a good opportunity to replace it all. Is there a part number for the surge tank and its supply hose? The supply hose is also leaking so I will change it all over at the same time. Can I order all this stuff thru Repco right? Jordan |

Hose you can get from repco not sure about tank. Try Ebay for the tank and Ford has the Rubber seal for $8.00. Ford quoted me $130 for new tank and the guy thought it came with the sensor.

If you can get a trade price from Ford it will be cheaper than Repco

The AU tanks do come with the sensor. the earlier ones do not.

i believe the mounts are different. i'm pretty sure that someone here has made them fit though.
