Hi Guys, yesterday after i drove to work, i had the aircon on max, its about a 20 minute drive down the freeway from home i got to work and turned the car off and it dumped coolant out of the overflow pipe on the header tank, it was about 32 degrees when i was driving, any idea what wouldve caused this? ive just had my headgasket and water pump replaced? theres still plenty of coolant in the header tank
thanks, Brent

blockage in radiator? I'm not entirely sure but if anything running your heater full bore should've dropped the pressure put on your cooling system :/ Was the air actually warm? Just confirming operation of your thermo stat. When you say still plenty of coolant is it meeting the max mark? Perhaps you just had too much to begin with?

Try a new Rad Cap, these are often overlooked.

True that i got a mechanic to pressure test my cooling sytem for leaks, water was dissapearing somewhere only way he could narrow it down would be the radiator cap, +1 dc_todd

radiator cap is my recommendation too... If it comes out the overflow pipe it is because the cap is letting past...

Mine does the same thing on hot days . It's just the radiator cap

If you fill it over max it pumps the excess out... Always run it at max because that gives you headroom then...

just keeping it 3/4 full should be fine though? the cooling system has always been great on my car. even on gas in 40 degree heat with the air con blasting.

wont cause any issue... But if you have a head gasket blow out you'd have more water to spare is what I was getting at... But you said just over half initially, wouldn't be much water difference between 3/4 and full... Same as your brake fluid... You don't run it at half just because you can... You run it at full as it contains enough to allow for pad wear...
Cheers, Tim

This happened to me once. Turns out you need to do the cap up ALL the way. Lost 3 litres when I stopped the engine.
New rad and new cap and it's all good now. Thanks, Evan.

thanks guys ill change the cap, could this also be a reason as to the car runs alot hotter in warmer temperature than it does at night? i mean at night it stays below L and at max goes to A, yet on warmer days it gets to M or R and stays there? this on an ef for the letter reference on the temp gauge

It shouldn't vary like that... No matter what the weather it should be the same temperature... Either your thermostat is playing up and getting stuck or your radiator can't cool enough on hot days... Possibly blocked... Sounds like the cooling system is due for a service...
