Bought some coolant - Calibre anti-freeze/anti-boil, 540g/lt glycol, but a friend said the coolant had to match the engine.
Any thoughts on this?

Just don't mix coolants. If you are going to use some other brand other than the Ford original then I would suggest you completely empty the system, clean it out and then use the new one.

It may be s**t, but pretty sure it's better than water...unless it's aggressive on the cooling system. paul w...buy a bottle of 100% coolant and mix it with distilled water to the correct coolant-to-water ratio/percentage. Tectaloy or Nulon brands work just fine. I have used both and haven't had any overheating issues.

just remember not to mix it up too rich, or it can chew through gaskets
ive got a feeling thats why my timing cover started leaking coolant in my windsor, roughly 3 weeks after a coolant change |

I've always used Nulon long life in all of the E Series Falcons I've owned and I've never had a problem with it. Like others have said, Flush out the cooling system and while the old coolant is drained it might pay to replace the thermostat too.

Nulon is fine,
I prefer Tectaloy Xtra Cool Gold. 1ltr treats 15ltrs. Used it for years and never had a problem.

Calibre Coolant is made by Nulon (have a good look at the reverse lable, will most likely state it there). Calibre additives are also Nulon.
Thier oil is Caltex from memory, I wouldn't touch that but the coolant and additives are Fine. Coolant is just ethylene glycol and water mixed to various ratios for various cars in most cases. I wouldnt fret, as long as you didnt grab the type B (75g per litre)!!

If you want to also drain your heater hoses the easiest way is to..
1.flush your old system. 2. Fill up whole system with tap water, tighten lower and upper hoses. Including thermostat. 3.turn car on and let idle with heater On max, untill your thermostat opens. The old coolant stuck in your heater hoses know mixes with all that water. Let it circle around for bout 5-10 mins. 4. Know it's time to empty again, you will notice its a very light pale green. You can even run tap water through again to ensure every drop of old coolant is gone. 5.if your using that distilled water you can even put a lil bit of it down your thermostat housing to get rid of most tap water that stays in the block. 6. Replace thermostat (optional) with a high flow one. 7.tighten both hoses n thermostat housing, then fill up with coolant / destilled water 50/50. Well around that.

Personally I'll just pull the heater hose off (not at the firewall end, the tap end) and just flush the heater core from there...saves you starting the car up, getting it up to temp and then having to wait for the system to cool down again...unless you want to burn yourself. While you're at it, inspect the heater tap and see if it needs replacing. If you can really be bothered, pull the radiator out and give that a good flush with the garden hose and if you have the money, replace all the hoses (probably set you back $200 in hoses though). If the hoses haven't been replaced before, you may have a higher chance of the hoses dying on you. Also I'd use distilled water in the cooling system over tap water (tap water only in emergencies or checking for leaks). Distilled water is less "hard" than tap water (yes...water does have a hardness level) which reduces damage to the cooling system. Honestly, you probably won't know the difference if you get rid of the car after a few years...but every bit would counts if you keep the engine for a long time.
