I just bought an EF that appears to not have been serviced recently so i'm changing all oils and want to flush the cooling system before replacing the coolant......I bought some Tectalloy 'Mukowt' yesterday.....Is that o.k for the EF 4.0 cos i been hearing bad stories about the EF cooling system.....And should i leave it in for a day or so.....or just run it a bit then reflush with new conditioner??? My other concern is which is the 'best' conditioner/inhibiter to use and can it have any or small amounts of Glycol wihout being anti freeze/boil???
There was a small Castrol conditioner on the shelf but i want to make sure....Or there is the Tectalloy coolant but it does'nt say much about being a conditioner/inhibiter??? |

Read the instructions on the bottle for the cooling system flush. Leaving it in there too long could be harmful to the system. Use ford Part # R1-424 for the power steering oil, its better than DEXII or III. You'll need about 3 lts to flush it good.

Too late i already done the p/s! Still hav'nt got ANY recomendations on coolant???

The ford stuff seems to be pretty good. Its about $50-60 for a 3.6L bottle that will mix till 16L. Also make sure you use distilled water to mix and not tap water.
Also for about $20-30 it would be a good idea to change your coolant hoses. They may look fine but they are prob not. My lower hose was all erroded but the damage was hidden from view. |

If the coolant was dirty, and it hasnt been serviced in ages, i would pull it out, and get it prefessionaly done, better than a head gasket or worse.

I like old school Glycol based coolants and not the HAT or OAT types. Castrol Anti freeze/Anti boil ( in the white bottle), is good. Make sure you have enough to make a 50/50 mix. that means about 7lts of it. Once the system is flushed and drained, just poor it in, and top up with water. Also, fit a new thermostat, and drill a 1/8" hole in it, stops heat shock at the radiator, and helps bleed the system.
