ok guys seen some nice copper bends at work today for a VERY cheap price
as was thinkin they can be used for the mandrel bend intakes for the falconsrather than stainless a few q, does copper retain heat ? or does it dissapate it rather well i not sure atm will ask plumbers tomoz. benifits i can see somethign different can be polished to a wicked shine! easy to weld at home no tig/mig needed cheap smooth bends bad parts could look tacky.? any other?

copper conducts heat very well, which is very bad for intakes

even if it is highly polished? to help ref;ect teh heat radiation??? mmm might just do it anyways and see what it looks and performs liek for $13 a bend

doesnt copper bend pretty easy to?!?!!?
so like wouldnt it get covered by dents and stuff from messing around in the bay?

Major dissadvantages #1-99 :
Copper heats up easily and takes ages to cool Not ideal for a 'cold' air intake |

Copper both heats up and cools very quickly. This is why it's used in the good quality heat sinks - it absorbs heat rapidly from whatever is hot and just as quickly gives it up to things that are cooler. The plastic intakes that used by ford are the opposite (thermal insulators instead of conductors). They take a long time to heat up and when they are hot hold the heat well.

Give it a go, write up a doco and then tell us whether it's worth it or not

For interest, here is a list of the thermal conductivity of different materials. The higher the number, the more heat will be transferred into the intake.
Good materials to use as far as keeping intake temps down: fibreglass 0.035k plastics (depending on type) 0.1 to 0.2k Most intake pipes are made from steel or stainless steel: Stainless steel ~14k Mild steel ~50k and the worst materials to use: aluminium 237k gold 317k copper 401k silver 429k So short of making a solid silver intake, copper is just about the worst material you could use. Its going to transfer about 25X more heat into your intake than stainless steel!

mmmm
BUT since it heats and cools quickly would it not still be good? plus from what every1 says abotu the air moving so fats for very little heat to be absorbed from the intake it could work

Since it absorb heat rapidly from the engine bay it'll also heat up the air as it cools down rapidly slowly . just don't get caught in slow traffic.

Has anyone ever tried making fiberglass intake piping or would the pure cost of the raw materials involved make it the fevered dream of a madman??
Put aside the hours of labour involved in sanding and glassing and sanding and smoothing etc... |

so if plastic stops heat from getting to the air, why do people change to stainless steel? Wouln't a mandrel bent plastic pipe be better?

Yes, plastic would be better. They are usually made out of steel because steel bends are easy to find and anyone with a mig can make them up.

its slightly impractical to mandrel bend plastic however you can go to a hardware store and buy some lengths of pipe and make ur own plastic intake then just spray it chrome to look cool and reflect nasty heat of course (rice avoidance reason), and it will cost a packet less then steel, oh just dont buy , or infact even ask about a bbq igniter or ull b arrested n sent to jail as a terrorist
