ok so weve got a copper intake manifold thats replicating a mandrel bent intake pipe thats been chromed on the inside , powder coated on the out, then wrapped in heat wrap to stop heat transfer, from the engine to the incoming air, yes. no power loss at all , so then this air travels to the intake manifold / plenum chamber of an ef/el which is a big chunky thing that holds radiated heat from the donk - get my point , i still rekon its an original idea and not a bad one at that , should look good polished up

I don't know if many of you have heard about this guy called Smokey Yunick , take a look at http://schou.dk/hvce/ he was right into MORE heat as a means to get MORE power from the internal combustion engine. I don't know how much truth is in it. But Frank you might be onto it, he just needs to get EVEN more heat to the manifold. I SAY GO FOR IT.

Without checking out every bloody article that tells you nothing of how the hell it would work, in a basic internal combustion engine heat means power loss, check back through this thread, I think EFFalcon posted power loss percentages per degree temperature. Please also note, that Smokey's idea started over 20yrs ago, if it worked for performance (including economy) we would have seen it by now.

Yeah I know I did read the whole thread plus many others. I too are skeptical about the whole Smokey deal. It's just another view point.
What I really like about the copper intake idea is that you don't need great welding skills to build it your self. If it were me I would probably take this further and make an outer skin heat exchanger, and feed some A/C super cooled air through it or something. Using the properties of copper to your advantage.

i'm with tickford 6 on this one. reading the original post by frank and his comments about giving it many hours of polishing when its done, it is obvious to me that he has done the mod for looks.
i also agree that the power loss will be negligable. may even save himself a few dollars when he fills up at the bowser as i have read other posts that claim hotter air will be more economical. yes the copper may transfer more heat to the air rushing through but considering intake's flow at a rate of hundreds of litres minute, i don't think you will notice anything in general driving. be lucky to lose anything down the 1/4 also. should look good all polished up and if you decide down the track that the heat distorts the colour too much then you can easy go back to stock while you think up something else. i gather it hasn't cost too much so no big deal.

Increased heat is more aiming for economy and complete fuel burn, rather than outright power.

Personally I wouldn't make or buy a copper intake.
But two thumbs up to Frank for doing this, I think it's a great effort! |

But two thumbs up to Frank for doing this, I think it's a great effort! same from me you just gotta try that's a big part of the fun. My son has an idea which I think is a bit wack. He's keen to make a clear intake pipe, out of what, who knows, anyone got some ideas??? and before someone says 4 inch garden hose, he's thought of that already.... (bloody teenagers)....

Good on ya Frank, nice to see people doing things out of the ordinary. Keep it up!
bigmat - Ive got an idea for a clear intake, remove it. Cheers

And get council to inspect it. Ha Ha Ha!
Couldn"t resist! Did you weld it?? or silver solder? Silver solder does the neater job.

You could have it hand engraved like a sax and chromed.
