I was gonna say, it all coems down to where you want the power and what kidna driveability you want. If I ever get a cam I'd be looking to get a mild to medium one that has decent driveability/fuel economy, but also offers a fair gain in the 0-60 bracket. Falcon's are quick nuff up high stock, its in the launch we often lack agaisnt the homo-dores

you know the only true way to fix that?? GEARING!!!
Hello 3.7's in my 5ltr, and omg its fun, and funnily enough my fuel economy is better You can boost your bottom end with cams, however the gain wont be as much as a good increase in diff gears, and I dont mean 3.45's either. For the 4 speed auto to have a similar 1st gear ratio to say an EF XR6, you will need a 4.6:1 rear end. 4.11's will definately do the job, and at 100kph you will be sitting on 2300rpm ish, and then see how hard your car takes off, and your fuel economy wont suffer as you dont need to apply any where near as much throttle as the load on the motor is a lot less.

EF, so a little heavier than the box cars, especially when its a fairmont. Your EA would be fairly slim compared to mine, but its still pulling good numbers for what it is.

Jay hit the nail on the head... Look closely at your gearing options. If you spend as much time on that as most folk do on selecting their "supergrumpycam that idles like a bad thing but cruises at 1500rpm and gives me 800km per tank", they'd be a lot happier.
The Stealth Courier came with 3.73 gears in the diff which made it fairly sluggish around town and not much better out on the highway. A change to 4.11 gears made a world of difference. Granted, first gear is good for about 20 feet but aprt from that, it is much better in all aspects. Including fuel economy due to the fact that it's not labouring. After sorting out the gearing with 16's and 215/60 tyres, I ordered a custom billet cam from Marty at Crow. You try and buy a custom cam for a G6! Marty and I have been mates for a long time and after telling him exactly what I wanted, he made his recommendation and I ordered. The new cam was fitted months ago and works well but there's still more in it. What I neglected to take into account was the fact that the head had been machined and therefore the cam is running retarded. Nobody offers a vernier gear off the shelf for the G6. A mate offered to make one but I'm just going to advance it by one tooth on the cam gear. That should give it more bottom end at the expense of the top end. I hate putting the foot down and waiting for the power to kick in, that's why I went the way I did with the gearing and chose a high-lift, short duration cam. More time is spent between 2000 and 3500 than anywhere else so that's the area I'm concentrating on. My son's EA has an RPD cam and the engine was rebuilt by Jay. I like what Jay does and call him a friend. It's horses for courses. RPD specialise in Ford I6 engines; Crow don't. |

I dunno about EF, but I put an ED Xr6 cam in my Ed motor and noticed a big diff... even without the Xr Head and ECU, it still got a big boost around the 2500-3800rpm mark.. and that was with standard exhaust..
now I have custom pod and big exhaust, and it goes like nuts.. but now I want more.. So in my shed sits an EL motor that is going to have some stuff done... like a stage 3 or 4 cam, with springs etc to suit... basic port matching etc, up compression with AU gasket and so on... it's like a disease... If I 'm still not happy I'll look at forced induction.. |
