What has the amount of shims got to do with springs Southy?

www.crowcams.com.au
They have a catalogue that not only gives you a rundown on cam specs, but also the projected power range, what models it suits, and whether or not it needs springs/tune.

not so much springs........ when you put a new camshaft in it alters the lift on the Valves, so therefor it the lifter is lifting to a higher extent.... when i did my cam, i left the same shims in it.... then noticed that f**k loud as ticking noise.... found out i need thicker shims to accomidate for the change in lift... problem fixed

Do the springs as well.
I had the stage 2 cam put in a couple of years ago when it was still their best, and it needed springs, and it ran like a b**ch until I added a piggyback chip to the computer. The vernier gear is a good idea as well. If you call Crow, I believe they sell cam, springs and timing gear as a package.

would there be any more peformance gain if i add the springs and vernier gear??? if not i wont bother because i dont think ill drive it hard enough to f#*k the springs.
thanks

As far as I knew, shims were only required on reground cams :?

mine was a billet cam yes.... BUT the lifters were ticking like crazy..... dad (mechanic) said its not doing any harm but to get the sound away just replace the 1.8 shims with some 2.4s and wallah! no more ticking..... just the sound of lumpy idle

The springs are precautionary. You really don't want to risk busting them.
The Vernier gear allows for better/easier tuning.

(If I'm wrong on anything, please all feel free to jump in)

The springs are heavier to allow for extra lift. This limits possible valve float at high revs. If the lifters (actually hydraulic lash adjusters not lifters) are ticking, either oil pressure is a problem or they are fairly worn and need replacing. 8-)
