i have been thinking about the design of the intake, in particular the intake manifold, and have come to the conclusion that i have no idea why it is the way it is.
A lot of people are chasing a less restrictive CAI, so my thought was to mirror the intake maifold so that the throttle body points outward instead of inward over the injectors.

Image

i have two ideas for doing this (i have not looked into the details of either of these):
1 - weld up all the mounting holes, and redrill them to line up when turned around 180 degrees (**i have NO idea if this will work - so if it sounds stupid, its cause it probably is)
2 - i work at a place that has a foundry, so i was thinking of getting an intake custom cast out of scrap intakes. then getting it all machined up... will mean a bit more money and a lot more work but.

i know both these ideas will also need some other things done apart from the obvious modifications to the manifold, eg - extended throttle cable, possible extension on electrical connections, etc.

Can someone tell me why this wouldnt work/why someone hasnt done this before or if someone has, can you point me in the direction of who has?

not sure if their would really be enough performance difference to equal the money involved in making the TB face towards the airbox.

ell if i get the upper half of the manifold custom cast, it would serve two purposes...
i would also custom the back end of it to allow for some more room up there, to allow for more room up there (custom alloy things etc).

but yeah i know it wouldnt make a HUGE difference, but how much would it make a difference/would it work?

imo i cant see it making a lot of difference, the intake is fairly well balanced to start with.. but it is restrictive.
Make something up that'll incorporate individual throttle bodies with say 6 inch trumpets.

It wont make any difference.

Not sure if you read above but its been done and that is only to reduce the amount of intake piping on a turbo setup.

+1 the ed has the throttle body at the front and you can also buy aftermarket inlet manifolds for turbo set ups that face the t/b to the front

There is a lengthy thread on this forum on a custom individual throttle bodies project (six TBs):
ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/i6-individual-throttle-bodies-project-t87803.html

There a couple of twin TB concepts/projects here:
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11198531

And there is this twin TB a while ago on this forum:

I'm still pretty interested in making a custom manifold for aesthetic and space saving reasons... Plus would be a good first project... Something that has little chance of making the car worse/breaking the car... So yeah, if anyone in Brisbane has an upper manifold laying around or even the whole manifold, I would like to get my hands on one... Cheers

i can tell you now that dual throttl body idea wouldnt be very hard with an upside down ed manifold if you know a good boily who can weld it up for you, and my mate made one for his vt a few years back and it made a big difference, altho getting so much air in the engine at low revs doesnt help

Can it be done without stuffing around with the ecu?
I don't want to get involved with that sort of stuff...

howd you go with the throttle cable with the throttle body going backwards, thats not a bad idea for boosted set up
