I was reading on another web site where to improve the cooling on the Ford I6 you can drill and tap a hole in the rear most water jacket on the head and run a hose from the top radiator hose to the tap in the head.

The guy who posted it said it will cool the rear of the head quicker and better and help the head gasket survive longer.

Now I am trying to work out the water flows in the engine by doing this and the logic of doing what he said.(I am sure he is right) Anyone have any ideas why this would help or who have done it themselves.

its a good idea seeing as though its usually the rear where the head gasket goes

Doesn't work. Seen 2 cars with this mod and the gasket died again in the usual I6 manner in the usual I6 timeframe.

Of all the headgasket failures I have seen ( on the Ford OHC I6), and I have seen sh!t loads, the biggest cause was not changing coolant, so inset the corossion.
The other thing you see is oil leaks on the inlet side. I was doing these under warranty on the EF & EL's.
Another failure was head bolts, the heads came off, right at the top, and also saw them come off when puting the heads back on, and we weren't allowed to fit new head bolts ( FoMoCo's instructions). To tight to shout some head bolts, d!ckhead engineers.

Thats a practice by all head services.

A good try, but sure, Im not convinced.

Im 100% certain the composite gaskets to blame.

most common 120 000km to 160 000km timeframe
leaks water into cylinders.

second most common same time frame
external water leak from headgasket on exhaust side of block.

then in no order
oil leaks on intake side

broken head bolts (most common i've seen is second from the back on exhaust side)

oil leaks from feed to chain tensioner through the gasket into timming cover. (causes very noisy lifters ans noisy chain, if left to long damage to lifters)

blowing from one cylinder to another

Another one I found was the Dual fuel vehicles broke head bolts more often then petrol only cars.
I also found that the head bolts that they changed to ( AU spec) are exactly the same as the ones used in the Mitsubishi 3.5lt V6 engines.

hmm mine has just hit 170k and is using water, seems to be a slight leak at the front of the engine on the exhaust side... doh... tossing up pulling the head and putting a new gasket and bolts in or buying a modified AU motor instead...
