Does anyone know if the ef/el XR6 has locating dowels for the cylinder head?,if so mine are missing.

Yeah they definatley do, all cars do, all the 3.9/4.0i OHC engines from EA-AU will have interchangeable dowels and it wont matter weather it's an XR6 or not.

Unbelievable who ever put the engine together last left them out,when I got all the head bolts out the moved sideways once loose no dowels,the other tickford head didnt have any either,will locate some asap,got the timing kit in cover on,used the ford T/C gaskets with nason timing kit,changing timing chain wasnt as hard as I thought,did hope to have the head on,but need locate locating dowels,let u's know how it goes;-)

I have done a head gasket change minus dowels.
Did the wifeys EF and had no dramas (s**t).

Not too sure if there are risks doing so or if it just makes lining the H/G up easier
I used them on my good motor though.

Pity they dont come in the vrs gasket set,would be nice.or offered by the machine shop after a head service,you paid a few $ and,"ill be back"

People are cheap and would expect the machine shop to give them to you for free. Easier to just take them out before it goes and put them with the rest of the bolts or straight back into the block.

Not sure if you can get them out without damaging them - some might fall out easy - others maybe not.
The local engine reco I use bins the old ones and fits new ones after the skim.

Obviously You might be able to get them from an engine reco mob.

They're a slightly loose fit in the head a tap in fit in the block, but they also seem to come off with the head... We use those flat circlip pliers... Gets them out of the head really really easily...
