Hi Folks,
My mate just took his EL Fairmont to the car wash, and thought he'd use the high pressue water to blow away any dust in engine bay. After doing that, he started the car, but it wouldnt idle right. He drove forward to the vacume bay, and it stalled when he placed it back in P. Now, it just wont fire up. It turns over, but theres no spark. We've cleaned out all the plugs and connectors we could get to, and have let the car sit for a few hours, but it still just wont fire. Any tips how to get it cooking again ? what should we check next ? Is there any easy (or hard) way to test the Distibutor or Coil pack ? |

take off the dizzy cap and spray some WD in there.
also... EL's run a Coil, not a coil pack... these (most likey) have a crack in them, and a small amount of water will make them miss fire and or die completely displace all the water you can and dry it... WD does wonders. Also check the plug holes... they don't like water either. I'd put my money on the coil... very common to do this.. if you don't know where its exactly located... its just above the passenger engine mount.

lol this happened to my mates XF EFI, we sprayed CRC 5.56 around the spark plugs and stuff, and it started and revved at 3000rpm for like 5 minutes

nah we sprayed that much in there, it revved by itself at 3000rpm for 5 minutes lol

Also check the TFI module as if that has any water or moisture in it, it wont fire at all.

NEVER EVER USE a high pressure hose inside the engine bay for the above reasons
a garden hose is all that is needed

Thanks Folks. I think you could be spot on with the coil there. It's just such a dog to get too. He's going to kick it over in the morning and see what happens. Otherwise we might haul over some car ramps and see if it's easier to pop it off from underneath.
Frank: He knows that now, thats for sure! It was actually an odd thing, we had one EL fairmont towing another! Should've taken a photo.

To replace the coil do it from underneath it is far easier.

You can use high pressure on the engine but it must be cold, the coil does get hot and if it hasnt any cracks yet it sure will after cold water hits it. To be on the safe side do it when engine is cold and place a plastic bag over the dizzy and the coil.

I carry 2 cans of "mechanic in a can" under the seat all the time. after I high pressure clean the s**t out of the engine bay, I'll literally spray anything thats electrical before I even start it up, it never fails to start a second of turning the keys.

I cant say I'm over cautious.
I pressure wash my engine regulary (not that it gets dirty) I've never had any starting problems ever! Only bad thing pressure washing did was leak water into my 308 via the inlet manifold. This made me flush 8ltrs of s**t oil through it! and it lived to see another 3+ yrs!

i do it several times a day at work and dont have any issues. u just have to know what u can and cannot get wet. a garden hose is plenty to soak compnonets beyond function. if the coil has a crack, a rainy day is enough to expose it.
