Dont do this! unless you want to cause a voltage spike and blow every electrical device in your car. Best bet is to take it to a mechanic or a battery shop and get them to do a voltage test while its running and a load test on the battery. that should indicate any faults ya have

Ahhh thats probably not a good idea. Check the pic below section 4.

Might fry your alternator and if that happens I shudder to think what might happen to the electronics in the car????

Just a word of warning.. :)

My XR had the globe in the boot stay on (all the time) and made the battery die.

Andrew - you say the lead plates in the battery are exposed? It's f**k mate. Once it's at this point, the lead plates are reacting to the point where the reaction wont reverse, as it does in normal battery operation.

But... when topping up, under the cap you will see there is a plastic 'collar' inside the hole which the cap covers. There is small 'gaps' in this collar... the miniscus of the water should be roughly level with the tops of these.

I wouldnt place a great deal of faith in the battery after this. Seriously - head to sprints, 100 bucks for a 520CCA. Lol, as my mechanic always tells me - "Dont stuff around"

Aww but its been going fine since ive topped it up :) I mean if i absolutely have to then yeah i will go buy that 520cca battery from sprints, but since ive topped it up with water its been fine... Infact its starts straight away now... even on a cold bloody night or day, it fires up straight away.. :)

BUT i will keep a close eye on everything, as we all have learned by now that im a hypocondriact (spelling) when it comes to my car lol.

I've gone through heaps of batterys (and cars) in my 20 odd yrs on the road so an easy way I tell if the battery is on the way out is to pop her on the front lawn crank up the stereo a bit and give her a wash, by the time I'm finished shamying her down if she starts the batt's fine if not then it's not taking as much charge as it should and its time to chuck it before it lets me down at the worst possible time..
If I get 4yrs out of one i'm doing well but I generally change them out every 3 or so. $100 isn't much to pay every few yrs for peace of mind that at least she's gonna crank over...
