left work early feeling pretty chuffed that its a friday and its all over for another week, only to get home and find a nice letter from the EPA saying my car exhaust is too loud.

now, i was pinged a couple of weeks ago but since then ive had a new tip put on the exhaust and its much much quieter. so, im 99% sure the car would be legal now. if it turns out to loud, fair enuf, ill cop the 35 buck charge and make the changes required, but if the car is fine as is, the way i see it i have these options;

a) let it go, the car is fine, it only cost $35 and it was probably too loud when i was caught anyways.

or

b) send off the EPA my certificate of compliance aswell as a letter asking for a refund of the money as my car is infact within the legal limits for noise pollution and i shouldnt be out of pocket.

What do you guys reckon?

Id go A (unless your really cant afford it)

because
1. As you say chances are you were over the limit
2. Its only $35
3. The probably wont do anything, so your end up paying
4. Its not worth the stress of arguing and probably losing
5. It will probably make it harder for you to deal with them in the future.

the money doesnt really bother me. its annoying coz i knew the system was too loud, but have fixed it in the time it took them to get their s**t together and send me the notice. so now i have to go and get a pretty quiet car tested anyways

dude i was in the same boat as you.. i thought my exhaust wasnt that loud... my friends are like man u gotta be kidding.. as if ur over!

well turns out i read 97 .. (but the guys at zorst shop were like that tester is a bit dodgy)

anyway got a stock one on and $70 ($120 for stock muffler) later i got my compliance certificate.

its s**t how you have to pay $35 to prove ur innocence. if you are under the limit... you should ask for a refund.
if I dont like someone.. i could just dob them into the EPA and they will have to get it tested and they will be out of pocket (even if their exhaust isnt that loud!)
HOW f**k IS THAT!!!!!!!!!

^ what he said, but id probably add:

6. Being a smart a** to the authorities will do more harm than good. You may win the battle but i bet it'll make the war harder to win.

Pick your fights :)

I would guess if you choose option "B" they would probibly take it to court,
rule in favour of the scum that wrote you up & order you to pay the court costs for both you and them for wasting the courts time.

It sucks, but, better to leave it

Yeah, it may be quieter now, but at the time of testing it wasn't, so I think your gonna have to pay it no matter what mate.

it hasnt been tested yet. it was off the judgement of a cop as i drove past them.

after calming down from the blind rage before i probably will leave it. see what happens tomorrow at the exhaust shop anyways.
