Hey everyone, Hopefully someone here can help me before I spend all my money at the mechanics

I have recently embarked on a Road trip in me 94 ED Xr6. I started in Yeppoon (just outside rockhampton in Qld) and made it to Melbourne.. (Just over two days later)

I arrived all set to get on the boat and go to Tasmania when I went for a drive to a servo to use the humanities and what do you know, The car stalled.. I know I had heaps of petrol and I had replaced all the belts, gaskets, pulleys, hoses etc etc before I left...

It lasted 2600 km's and decided to give up just after reachin melbourne sitting at some traffic lights, NO overheating cause I had been sitting for some hours and Volts are fine, It turns over but won't Start..

I Checked everything and it all seemed physically fine, 3/4 tank petrol, oil pressure, volts, all seemed fine. except I thought the Fuel injectors weren't firing as I could not hear them ticking, and i noticed I had no spark....

The RACV guy told me the same thing, No Spark and no Injectors, the fuel pump is fine.. and he wasn't sure what was causing it.. ANYONE had the same problem? Is there just some Fuel injection module or solenoid that fails on these cars?

Any help would be appreciated, Even if any of you are in Melbourne and could suggest a mechanic that may be open Monday (preferably one with a Tow Truck)

Thanks - Steve

It might be your distributor and/or coil.

My ED fairmont died one day. it would turn over and everything, but wouldnt start. had the car towed and changed the coil and distributor. works fine now.

coil might have died.

either that or the hall sensor on the dizzy might have colapsed. this will give you no spark/fuel also.

well I had come to the conclusion that just the Dizzy stuffin up wouldn't also prevent the fuel injectors from firing..

Dunno what the hell the Hall sensor is...

Whats the price on a second hand Dizzy and coil these days...

hall sensor is the pickup in the dizzy (chopper wheel and infrared bit)

as for s/h cost's ur looking at around $30 for a dizzy and $15 for a coil from most reputable do it yourself wreckers.

i think if the dizzy is playing up it would play a key part in the injectors firing. as its basicly telling them when to 'open'

someone correct me if im wrong!

Here I was thinkin the Dizzy only controls the spark..

For those prices Ill replace them both and see how I go I suppose....

I'll change a Diff, gearbox, head gasket, timing gears.. anything..

Fuel injection systems are a thing I am not familiar with yet...

Thanks anyway...

The worst that can happen is I'll have a new coil and Dizzy even if it doesn't fix it...

That would make just about everything replaced, apart from starter motor and alternator

Is it smartlock?

Does the smartlock light blink rapidly to indicate it is immobilised?

The car will crank but the ECU will turn off spark & fuel to prevent the car from starting

The RACV bloke musn't know much, most RACQ blocks carry a probe with them that can measure pulses from the TFI unit while cranking. Identifies straight away whether the ign coil is stuffed or the tfi module is stuffed.

It's got be the dizzy or ign coil causing the problem. Although TFI modules generally let the car start once the engine cools down. Have you checked the condition of the lead from the coil to the dizzy cap and the rotor button etc..

I think I remember the guy say something about the TFI unit but he couldn't do anything else.. I believe he checked the Coil and Dizzy but never said they were the problem...

How hard is it to replace a TFI unit...

It wouldn't turn over at all if it was a problem with smartlock.. Had that happen before...

I think to replace the TFI you are going to need to pull the dizzy out with it...its on the side of it I think. Though best luck is to replace your dizzy and see how that goes. Good luck

is your interior light working? if not then check the interior fuse as if its blown then smartlock doesnt work and then your car wont start but will still turn over. worth a check b4 replacing tfi.

i had the same problem with my first car (eb gli) and it turned out to be just a blown interior fuse.
