Me also. Have heard very mixed reports on JMM now. Might look at wad for cam for ute now.

The engine was built in april may 2005, and its now done just over 10000km, so yeah , its barely run in.
Im driving it really easy now, which is good cause it helps with economy, but then thats not why i built it in the first place. Some ppl use JMM gear and never have an issue, im only speaking from experience, but there r others who dont like his stuff. For me, im saving for a house now, so regardless of what happenes with the car, as long as its running im not spending any more money on it.

So Does the stand ecu handle the idle or not?

Its always worth while changing your timing chain & guide if your working with cam & head, you'll get a more accurate timing when dialing in. plus the fact that you now have more Kws then a old tired stretch chain can handle.
I call it "insurance"

The guys doing my car said the timing chain would go overtime $450 to replace it. the chain guide is the problem for me?

Strange...
I know a couple of people with Dev 5's and no problems... I'm actually driving one now, and its never made a chain noise in its whole life (knew the previous owner) |

Can't give you a decent answer... The previous owner seems to have dialed in the cam to whatever he felt best and I think its affecting the idle. The others I know that have this cam say the idle is excellent, near stock. |

I call it "insurance" changing a chain and guides is a big job, especially if theyre in good condition. if the head has had a major shaving this will slack the chain off a bit, however the main stress put on the timing gear with a new cam is the heavier valve springs, ie its more load for the cam to work against and therefor more load on the chain and guides. check your chain and adjuster when the cam goes in, if theyre in good nick leave it be. from what we have found the main problem is the adjuster getting stuck and not adjusting the chain tension correctly. -mitch

Mine was brand new, i had a FULL rebuild, everything was brand new including the timing chain!

I am running Waggin's old dev5 top end setup. The old problem I have had with the dev5 was with my timing chain which was stretched when I put the head and cam on but couldnt afford to replace it at the time.
I replaced the timing chain, tensioner and both guides, I now only have a slight chain slap which you cant hear when in the car. I have also put a switch on the ISC so i can switch it off when the car gets to normal operating temp. I put the idle up a bit so it sits at about 750-800rpm, when in gear(auto) with aircon on is stits around 650rpm. I travel about 700-1000km a week and have had the head and cam in for about 30,000km and it goes great. This is still running on the stock computer ( I have a motec sitting here but I cant afford to have my car off the road to install it) and a stock auto transmission. The only thing i changed was the fuel rail to an AU one so when i get the time to install the motec i can run bigger injectors Bucko

after a chain has caused chain slap, if the cam is changed will that correct the problem or has it caused damage and needs replacing?
what causes the chain slap exactly?
