In my case i think the chain slap is mainly caused by the amount that has been shaved off the head and useing an au head gasket which causes slack in the chain, than by if you were just installing the cam into a stock head.
Every one revolution of the timing chain in my car causes slack in the chain at the top guide just after the cam sprocket, it them slap against the top guild as it gets tension again.( sounds like 1 very noisey lifter) It doesnt slap all the time, it might only slap every 10 or so revolutions. I think that my tensioner is having problems keeping the correct tension. I am sure that the chain slap will wear out the guide and chain quicker but I just dont have the time now to look into it any more to find a way to make it stop. Bucko

mine will slap worst at between 2000-2500rpm, if i hold it there it will continuously slap until the revs drop below or go over that range...
if the cam is causing the problem will a different cam profile fix it? or has the damage been done?

changing the cam wont fix it, the problem is to do with the slack in the chain, not the cam/camgear.

ok so in my case, i have already checked, cleaned and reset the tensioner, guides are fine, cam gear is fine, rocker gear is fine, so the only other thing it could be is chain strech, which people are saying doesnt happen in an I6...

Chain stretch can happen... From memory there has been a few posts regarding it. If you have possibly decked the block and the head, plus a thinner head gasket, it would cause the chain to be a little too long.
Or if the tensioner has made the chain too tight, it may cause it to stretch. If you have changed chain guides, the bolt that holds the left guide on may be too tight, which is not allowing the tensioner to push the guide over and up the tension on the chain. This would give the appearance of a loose chain. |

yeah my the head has never come off, guides are still original, only thing that has been touched is the cam, it could be possible that the installer didnt reset the tensioner and as you said it was too tight causing it to stretch...

I have replaced my timing chain, guides and tensioner and still get a bad timing chain rattle between 1000-1400rpm which is right on idle.
I'm running an AU head gasket & not sure if the head has been shaved. Is there anyway to fix this problem? |

as already said, it could be your chain, guides or tensioner, however big cams do slap chains, and they either do it at low revs or high revs. Tiny changes such as LSA's can fix slap, but it defeats the purpose. The reason why it slaps is its coming off lobes and being caught by the next lobe. Only skips a bees d**k, but its enough to make the chain slap

sorry but what are LSA's?
also... after running a big cam that causes slap, can the slap be overcome by changing to a smaller cam? or has damage been done?

LSA = Lobe Separation Angles, to do with the cam geometry, not an adjustable feature.

So does this slap cause any damage? I take it the guides won't last as long?

can break guides, but if it hasnt then your right, if you put a different cam in, not necessarily smaller you shouldnt have any probs

HAHA, I get the timing chain rattle between 1000-1400rpm. Idle is 1100-1200rpm, any lower and the car stalls under steering load since I don't have the power steering pressure switched hooked up to the Megasquirt ECU. |
