Hey guys,

Just want to know the difference between eb/d and el blocks.
I have a motor from a 93 pano and i want to use the block as a rebuild for my el.
Just want to know if i will have any problems using an el rebuild kit on it.
Mostly want to know about the crank/rods/pistons/gudgeon pins/oil reliefs.
Also sensor locations (im pretty sure these are mostly the same)

you will need to add a knock sensor. otherwise, its all there.

Yep. But the rods are still the same in the el hybrids. Just a different part number.

The cranks are not all the same though.

Some are solid, and somewhere along the way they became hollow and have different numbers of counterweights on the crank too.

Any one got details on what is in which model?

Also my ED block doesn't have the holes to mount the BBM support braces too... I had to cut and weld and custom make up some BBM braces to suit my block...

Timmy, will be interesting to see if my block has the mounts. I suspect it doesn't from what i can see. Will have to check the BBM mounting locations.

Ben, thanks for the tip. I don't know if I'm too concerned by this as this motor will only be used high comp NA. Do you have any specific reference to when they switched?

Had a geez at the block and pulled some numbers.

91da= eb to early ed.. 94da is late ed to early el.
eb bolck wont have any added mounts for bbm braces ect, but the braces are not neccesary

Top coil bolt on mine... See my build thread for through the last few pages (link in sig)... I made up a bracket so had room to put it on top of the bracket... Reasoning for the bracket is in the build thread...

I was under the believe the braces help prolong the life of the intake gasket? The stop of the weight of the manifold pulling down and putting excessive pressure on the bottom of the gasket and not enough on the top... From what I can gather El mustn't have had enough because they really went to town with them on a BA... Braces hanging off it in every which direction...

the braces are also there so the head can be removed and the manifold can remain in place..

really? there you go...

They've always seemed to be an important part in Ford's manifolds... From the Log manifold brace... Three on EF/EL manifolds to the half a dozen on the BA...

Be hard trying to get the head off with the manifold on there like that... usually unbolt it all and just let it rest whether it sits... The port holes make good handles and if you left the manifold up there it'd be hard to get the head off and back on and then insert a gasket into the gap where the old one was...

BA's seem to be shocking for blowing a section out of the intake manifold gasket too... either they're s**t or if the intent was to have braces help stop it then they failed...
