It sits under the car, and im not sure whether its required?

I seem to be taking it off every time i work on the car, can i just leave it off while driving?

Im pretty sure it like a bash plate thing, so you scrape that gaurd instead of your sump.[i] Wrong, what EL Fairmont said 'vvvv'

That part helps air push through your radiator. Not up and under into your engine bay.

i never had one on my old ef wagon and it didnt over heat
but what GeZza200 said you may dent your sump if your not carefull especially if your car has been lowered

If whatever you hit is hard enough to dent the sump, that flimsy plastic isn't going to help you!

I agree with EL_Fairmont, it's to help airflow through the rad.

I thought it was a stone guard for the front of the engine (Belts and so on)

It was put there for a reason otherwise it would have been a cost saving over most of the E series range. Mine has a few cracks but i leave it on.

took mine off but never got around to putting it back on.

havent noticed a difference. i think its a stone guard for the belts

if its that plastic piece under the front bumper that has a small 2 inch downwards lip on it, its an aero aid. the lip banks up high pressure air at highway speeds and creates a wall that reduces air getting under the car and thus front end lift. also as already stated is supposed to help stable airflow around the radiator.
