Hey guys, over the weekend i did a fair bit of km's on the highway on the way to kandos which got my L/100 average down ..

I noticed when my fuel was low on my gauge, it still read i had 150km range. When the range became 120km the fuel light came on the dash so i filled up because i didn't feel like walking. obviously i trust the gauge more then the computer, but is there any reason it does this?

I trust mine 100%

On highway trips I can clock over 130k's on a orange light.
With city driving Its around 80k's

Again, with a full tank, its around 550k's with an hour of 110kph its around 800k's DTE

I also use the average fuel usage to indicate problems, I'm always around 12.5l/100
but with a flogging, it hits 13+

It'll always fluctuate with your driving, take into concideration traffic and weather.

I've had my trip computer down to 2km till empty :P

It's pretty accurate - as stated all depends on your driving, it can go from 120 down to 50 in a heartbeat if say you come off highway driving and start running around locally putting ya foot into it

With the stock Ford fuel pump I got about 2 or 3 km with the trip computer saying 0 - this was on the flat around town (and it kept wanting to stall, so I kept putting it into neutral and turning car off and then back on and starting, and coasting as it stalled again--- etc etc etc).

Now, with the "new" fuel pump that appears to be crap (don't think it supplies enough fuel for my heavy boot to be honest!) I have to refill when it gets to about 30km remaining as car will start stalling with around 20km to go on trip computer.

Fuel warning comes on with about 80 to go around town and 120 out the motorways. Trust this, it is spot on. You cannot guess any better than that, it's deadly correct.

I missed the last petrol station for 30km's when going out of town the other week and managed to get car about 10km once it "ran out" by running on fumes, neutral, engine off and combinations of the above... I knew it was going to happen, and then simply forgot to fill up. If you turn hard into a roundabout and floor it and you don't smoke the rear up then you know your gas is running low...... ;)

The trip computer in my BA isn't very accurate.
I have run the range 20km past "0" on one occasion,
and the economy can be 0.3L/100km out.

Best to just use the odometer. My calculations put
the range at about 600km per tank (11.3L/100km), whereas
the trip computer always tells me about 560-570km.

After driving a BA from Wellington to Auckland and back, I would agree on that. The EF / EL (AU?) ones also UNDER ESTIMATE the fill amount, but once you've been driving with the petrol in the tank a while it works it out reasonably well.

The BA will (happily) got past ZERO on the trip computer. 20-30K's with absolutely not a lot of pedal use, for sure.

You have to remember that a trip computer is constantly re-checking and working out averages. This may explain why it suggests 570 instead of 600 when you fill up entirely, or maybe it's just becuase the float hits the top of the tank so it misses the last few litres of petrol you cram in there?

I thought it was a buffered reading, and I've run a good 10k beyond empty a number of times, depends how cheap I'm feeling that week  . Coasting as much as i could ect.
people here are talking about using there trip comps which you got in the fairmont but you can check it on your dash cluster getting it into sevice mode, I think there's tech doc on how to get it into it.

No i don't, but why do u ask? Because im about to stick a set in there because i believe one of mine is leaking while the car is off (takes abit longer to start the engine occasionally(flooding the motor) )

Thanks for the reply's guys, looks like i had a bit longer to go on the orange light, but i just got a little worried because around town i get the trip computer to 60 DTE and the orange light hasn't even come on ..

i've run the gauge past 0L left for 10 k's

The au's MAY (but hasnt really been proved) give a different reading on the meter. but it wont be to a large degree.

Do the maths.....
1. Fill up the car (68L) and reset the trip odo.
2. Drive till near empty.
3. Fill it up again and see how many litres it takes, say 62L for example.
4. Take note of the trip odo, say 520km for example.
5. Fuel economy calculation is:
(62 divided by 520) x 100 = 11.92L/100km
