Hello members, I have a quick question that I hope someone can answer. Is there such a device to cool engine oil similar to that used to keep transmission oil cool ?

Doesnt this cause pre-mature engine wear ?

- MIKE only if you run the oil to cold. that why oilstats were invented |

i asked about this a few months ago (benefits of an oil cooler) and i was told that they were pointless and could even be damaging unless your engine is realy packing the punch

Surely there's no need though, as that's what the cars cooling system is for - to cool the block which would also cool the oil in it? If your oils getting hot wouldn't the easiest step be to upgrade your current cooling system.

on a stock engine it's point less
but some thing creating alot heat you can over heat your oil. an wich case an oil cooler can help. oil and coolent temps do not remain the same. you'll never know unless you have an oil temp gauge fitted any way. |

when oil heats up, its lubricating properties are deminished as it gets thinner, and also, as it heats up, it deteriorates, and over time, the oil breaks down, keeping it cool prolongs the oil life

run the engine hot enough & the oil will loose its viscosity, almost as thin as water & it'll start to loose its lubricating properties. unless you're running a turbo or travel ling at speed of 240 kph for the next 6 hours. its not essential.
the oil cooler does not cool the oil to the point where it becomes cold. it'll only minimize the heat build up from operating at high revs, towing, turbos, & high horsepower engines. it'll ease the pressure on the cooling system.

A while back, my old '82 XD 5.8 had an engine oil cooler and transmission fluid cooler.... I believe it was in highway patrol back in its prime....
One thing I do know though.... that extra kit made towing my boat a lot easier up Eucumbene way... Cheers, Pete |

beleive it or not but youve already got an oil cooler on your car, its called the sump. one of the prime jobs of the sump is to help cool the oil. if you run aftermarket il cooler then you will just need to adjust wht viscosity oil you use in the car. put simply if your car aint revving of it tits for hours on end going round and round a race track then it aint needed
