IM currently running an I6 in my EF fairmont... mods are=
10mm top gun ignition leads stage 2 crow cam billet adj cam gear EF XR6 cylinder head (flows 369hp poteintal) $1000 reco n port job 5spd manual conversion heavy duty clutch cold air induction extractors (no name) 2.5 inch exhaust standard 3.08 diff so far 14.69 quater at 93.65 mph 133.5rwks... My situation is- my engine has a bad oil leak and the engine is 242 thousand kays old... Any ideas on what type of block i should use... I want to retain all the accesorys to my current enine (head, cam extractors enc) any advantage of bolting an EL xr6 short engine to the gear ive already got?? or are the GLI and XR6s block pistons and crank the same??? xr6 better for quaters and burnouts (reliability)??? How about an AU sohc xr6 short engine with the EF xr6 gear ive already got??? compatible?? I want the new combo to be as fast if not faster than my current times (when properly run in of course!!) sorry for the long post!! just alot of possibilities... cheers!!!

Only difference with the XR6's is the head and cam, so the bottom ends are the same. Maybe fit an AU bottom end? requires a bit of work though, or just fix your oil leak?

yaeh could fix the l oil leaks....
But cannot fix the age 240.000 kms!!! stil want to race it on the quaters and burnout comps... so want the short block to be a lil bit more reliable than standard... forged pistons??? race gasket kits?? Has anybody used an AU block with EF xr6 gear??? do u get any more power?? or jus reability and more smoothness with an AU block???

im in a similar situation as yourself at the moment. If I was you I'd go for an AU bottom end. Doesn't matter what model, they are all the same. AU's have extra bracing for the crank and bigger bearings from memory and a better rod/stroke ratio than the E-series motors. Basicly, they can rev harder, should be more reliable and have reduced NVH compared to E-series.
The other option you have is to rebuild your engine with Race Series gear etc but it's not worth it unless your running a turbo setup or NOS or something that requires a stronger bottom end. There is no performance gain from using Race Series gear versus a stocker. It's just about reliablility. If you go the AU, the only problem you might have is that a lot of wreckers will only sell the motor complete, not just the bottom end, as I have found out. |

The engines goin to stay NA for insurance reasons...
The AU engine seems like a gd idea.. Extra strength and better harmonics sound great.. not too costly either from the wreckers.. And as for not being able to buy a short AU I6 from the wreckers..-thats ok... would jus take the AU I6 apart and put all my goodies into it from the EF engine.. HAS ANYBODY DONE A SIMILAIR JOB WITH THEIR ENGINES??? would be glad to hear your experiences!!! |

Your head would be fine on this AU short block. The rocker ratio is 1.8 as opposed to the 2 on the E series. The heads extractors, and all the top end stuff will bolt up to the AU block fine. One(big) problem is the fact that the AU sump doesn't fit and fouls on the K-Frame. So that will need to be cut/welded which may create legal issues.
Also the transmission mounting points are different AFAIK Mark at ITS Performance does AU bottom end conversions, and also bolts up the existing transmission to the AU bottom end. He modifies the K-frame and whatever needed... The price he gave me was very generous in terms of work required. Have a chat with him, great bloke. Cheers

yeah if your fitting it to a EA-ED you have to either move the front crossmember foward or just grind the front of the AU sump down and it will fit. I'm not sure if you do the same thing on EF-EL's. AFAIK, the gearbox should bolt straight up although some people have used an AU bellhousing when doing the conversion.....
