ok last ngiht on my trek home from work my car started to overheat and beep at me.. very very unusual as it wasnt even hot althougha lil humid.
i got home and let it cool then checked the coolant and guess what it was DRY, id only filled it 3wks ago and it was full when i filled it it has taken around 7L of fluid there is a leak under the headers around the headgasket. its a 95 EF gli sedan any help on a fix besides taking it to a mechanic or doin any major work. all help much appreciated |

Headgasket is gone.
They often blow out under the headers and stain the side of the block, sounds like thats your problem.

Headgasket gone, simple as that.
Might get worse, might stay the same. Might go to start your car one day and so much water has leaked into a cylinder that it's hydralocked. No guaranteed way of fixing it, except changing it! For everyone that dreads headgasket changes, I say look at Till Lind. If someone who manages to lock themself in their own boot is willing to attempt it, then you should be able to as well.

Hmmmm if there is a leak near the headgasket...I would guess the head gasket has died?

hahaha same problem only mine has gone through 5 ltrs in less then 2 days
Can anyone recomend a good machinic to do this job. Maybe a nice ford mod member would fix it for a little cash or cans? Thry can choose 
This is the second one in 9 months due to my cooling system which just got replaced last week and I thought the problem was all fixed.

ok then so whats aheadgasket normaly cost to replace.. i ahve no idea mechanicaly or otherwise.. but i ahev 2 mates that are appp mechs so.. maybe a good thing
when changing the head gasket also means a few more gaskets eg.. headers zorst manifold etc wateva? this sucks im poor as and now more kn problems |

yep sounds like shes goooooooone. what year app mechanics are ya mates . you will be looking at getting your head reco and a vrs set(valve regrind set) i just done mine and im a mechanic as well so got it all at trade me back bout $1000 but i had my head street ported and polished to flow bout 380hp but its cheaper if you just get it reco depends if you want to mod your car or not

that like... a full months wages well 2 are 1st yr another is an aircraft engineer one of me mates who a 1st yr been around falcons his whole life and knows more than the bloody ford mechs in perth... well give it a shot and if it fks up.. its for sale |

as steady said Till_lind is having a crack at it, heaps of people have done it. there is heaps of info on here to do it. Im sure in a couple days Till will have his back together and all the pics will tell the story.
If you are strapped for time to have your car off the road you can speed it up by getting another head and getting it checked out then its just a matter of lifting the old one off and put the new one on. should only take less than a day.

mUTHA - a lot of the $1k is labour charges, which doing yourself you'll avoid.
depending on the condition of the head, and any machining work that may need to be done to it, expect about $200-$300 in parts, and if the head only needs a skim. its pretty easy to do, and can be done over a week (if you take it off on the weekend, get it skimmed during the week, and slap it back on the next weekend)

i need my car everyday so cant have it apart over a wk... isnt it as easy as just raplacing the gasket?? fkn cars and horis not alot has been done just a cat back and el intake pretty much under the hood... boring but simlpe untill now grrrrrrr |

it can be done over a weekend, but its best to get the head skimmed to ensure its flat & clean - unless you strip it in the morning, and get a workshop to do it for you on a sat arvo?

If you just replace the gasket it will blow out again in a few months (if not immediately). I guarantee it!
What you NEED is: Head bolts = $30 Head gasket = $35 std or $80 for AU MLS Head skim = $60 + gasket stripper, silicone, degreaser, coolant The time intensive part is getting the head down to a shop for machining. If you need the car you would be better off getting a second hand head, having it machined and tested so you can take the car off the road for an evening to do the swap.
