ok here goes the story, ive got my ef Fairmont sitting in the garage which i most weekends. i go to start it up just before, and i hear a loud bang, pop the bonnet, take a look, n i can smell burnt rubber, i realized that the belt had ripped, ok no dramas, i go inside to get the keys for the focus, and then i notice its leaking oil???
any ideas on what happend??? its to dark to check, and i dont want to cause further damage by trying to fix it...
and anyone no how much it cost for a mechanic to change a drive belt???
i wanted to do it myself but my dad being a exmechanic told me its a f**k job

New belt is peanuts, and fitting one takes 2 minutes including removing the thermo fans for more room

Just do it yourself, I replaced the one on me EL fairmont. Took all of 15mins max.

Just put a 3/8 ratchet in the square slot on the tensioner arm and push down. This loosens the pressure, now place a drill bit or alley key in the slot which will hold the tensioner arm in the loose position.

Now put the new belt on, there is generally a sticker on most falcons of the belt diagram on the bonnet.

Now push down again on the ratchet and remove the drill bit/ allen key and slowly let the tensioner arm re-tension the belt makeing sure it is aligned correctly on all the pulleys.

job Done...........................

really??? ive changed a vn belt once, but there is a s**t load more room. my dad was telling me if i did it at home, id have to pull off the bumper, remove thermo's, and most likely change the aircon belt, since it wud be on its way out too.
is it possible to do with out removing the thermo fans??

You can do it without removing thermo fans and there is no seperate a/c belt on an EF/EL falcon. It's all driven by the one serpentine drive belt. The only thing you need to remove is the intake snorkel (2 srews and 30 secs removal time) and the pwr steer plastic gaurd(if you have one fitted).

theres only two 10mm bolts at the top for the thermo fans. After you undo these and unclip the wiring plugs, they fans lift straight out.

Then as mentioned in the previous post, get a socket wrench and the plug bit slots straight into the square hole in the tensioner, which is the one piece section with two pulleys on it on the passenger side of the motor at the front.

Turn the wrench clockwise which will push the tensioner away from the belt which in turn lets you remove the old belt. then thread your new one on each pulley bar one, then push on the tensioner so you can push the belt over the last pulley.

Seriously, once you suss it out you'll understand how easy it is

why on earth would you try and squeeze your hands in there, when it takes literally a few seconds to remove the fans :)

easy as. pretty tricky without any tools but it can be done...
I did it in front of supa crap when mine shredded spontaneously 2 days after I got the car from a FORD dealer who roadworthied it etc...

Before I found out about the tensioner socket, I used hand strength to put it on... it should be even easier with a loose tensioner.

ok, from the info ive gotten, it seems pretty easy, so i doubt ill have any dramas with the belt.
atm im more concerned about the oil leaking from i don't no where.
ill give it a go tomorrow and try to fix everything up. thanks for the help guys and the pic EL__Fairmont. top work, nice n quick results

your power steering pump may be damaged...sometimes the pulley gets damaged when the belts break, also the tensioners can seize up....

be prepared for more than just a belt be stuffed

awww s**t, i hope its not the power steering pump... it was leaking a fair bit of oil, maby a bit too much to be the power steering fluid?? but then again it def wasn't motor oil :(....
i wont ask how big of a job it is to change the power steering pump just yet. but should i be worried???
also is it possible to drive "at all" with a rooted power steering pump?

Not without a belt as you can say seeya to the engine pretty quickly. Check that your aircon hasny siezed and sprayed refrigerant oil and gas around.
