well my mate borrowed my car (EB2 fairmont) to go to sydney cause its in better condition than his
and of course, an hour out of melbourne the car showed signs of a blown head gasket (was using alot of water)
but it was still running ok and wasnt any steam out the exhaust
so i said just keep filling it up with water every now and then and make sure its running when the waters added to try and reduce the risk of cracking due to temprature shock...

now they're on their way home and in albury the car stalled and when started again now is blowing lots of steam out the exhaust...

so i said the same, to make sure it doesnt run out of water completly and to keep topping it up regulary when running...

now what else can i tell them to do to avoide damage?
even with adding water so it doesnt run out, will there be damage?
it hasnt overheated or anything, just using alot of water and is now running a lil rough (understandably lol)

so with 370km to go, what are my chances of having a running car whent hey get home? lol

Get them to check the oil?
I drove mine for probably 1000km with a leaking headgasket, and it was bad.
Like took alot to turn motor over in the morning because cylinders were hydra-locked.
Had to to just keep trying till the cylinder that was full finally got to the point of exhaust valve opening LOL
But, it differs alot, depends where it's leaking and how bad?
Pretty hard to internets diagnose.

yeah i asked them to check the oil and under the rocker cover, said it was still fine...
i dont think its at the point of hydro locking just yet lol

its a bit hard for me to diganose over the phone cause thse guys arent car people lol, so its a miracle they even noticed anything was wrong with the car to start with!

it sounds like it should be ok, as long as the water is being burned up and the engine isnt overheating, im hoping that it will be all good

make sure they dont buy any metal filings crap from the servo for headgasket leaks.

metal fillings for headgasket :s lol

or are you talking about chemi weld?

they are now saying that they cant drive more than 50 meteres without using all the water in the reservoir lol

so might be time to call the RACV me thinks

ok so the plot thickens!

apparently they drove from sydney to albury without putting any water in the car - even thought they knew the car had a leaking head gasket at that stage (but wasnt too bad)...

so how tough are these bottom ends?

if i whack another head on with a new gasket is it likely that the bottom end is rooted or will it be alright?

i know its hard to answer due to the amount of varibles lol, not even i know what has happened!

If it's overheated real bad the head might have gone soft, and will more then likely be warped.
Bottom ends are pretty damn tough, but it depends whats happened to it?
Only way I can see it killing the bottom end is if the water has contaminated the oil and it kills bearings, it's hydra locked and bent a rod, or if it overheats so much that the piston scores bore?
All pretty rare to happen.

They could try driving it with rad cap loose if they are real desperate, stop it pressurising the system and hopefully minimise coolant loss.
But it sounds like it's well and truly gone hahaha.

yeah im not concerned about the head
ill get it checked out and will buy another from a wrecker if need be
and the water only went muddy on the trip from sydney to albury, so they werent driving with the muddy water too long and it hasnt hydrolocked yet (how i have no idea lol)

im concerned about it havinig overheated, but its impossible to tell how bad it was because with no coolant the sensor wouldnt know how hot the engine is lol

and its not being driven anymore, its being trailored home, so at least it wont get any worse.

all im trying to determine is if i go to the trouble of shaving the head so its true (after getting it crack tested) and fitting a new gasket, will it still be ok...

but i think by the sounds of things it should be ok? lol

Usually the rest will be fine, the head is the sacrificial part with the overheating.

It might be ok, may just need gasket changed.

If head has warped, just get another head, get it cleaned up, flatten the block, whack it on.

Use the AU metal gasket & Head bolts, shouldn't happen again.
