when mine was on the way out. the crankingt power was slowing down. kinda like if theres not much power in the battery

ah cool - sounds about right then! the battery is new-ish, and it didn't sound like an electrical drain - so it'll be the starter then!

Generally silence! It really depends on what is failing. Is the throw out solenoid not working so the gears are not engaging? Are the Brushes worn and so not making a good electrical contact? Is a bearing failing so the started is tearing itself apart?
Lost of different ways that a starter can fail. cheers Scott

mine used to make crunching noise about a week before it failed completly.

some will click, some will make horrible noises, some will spin slowly, and some won't do anything.
