I've read all these threads about modding the air intake so that you suck in more air but have never really understood the right way to go about doing it.
Pod filters, XH snorkels, cutting pieces out of the standard airbox... What is best/suitable for me? The car is an EA MPFI. I understand the principle of ramraiding the air in and sucking in cold rather than hot air, question is which way to go about it is best for me? Thanks.

I reckon, a combination of..
1. replacing your snorkel with an xh snorkel, 2. using a K&N panel filter to replace your stock 1 3. Cut a hole either under or to the side of the airbox lower half and have a large tube (such as bunnings sell) to come underneath the car and scavenge cold air under the car.

ahh, its different to the BA, well maybe you could have tubing going from the top down to behind the headlight.

I run the XH snorkel and a K&N panel (plus 4499's, hi-flo, 2.5" lukey w/2 muffs).
I dyno'd my car when it was stock with a brand new head, and pulled 114.X, and 117.Xrwkw without the airbox. A difference of 3.X kw. This was in the cooler months in ACT. I then dyno'd just at the end of Spring last year, with the snorkel, filter (and exhaust mods) and it pulled a hefty 127.Xrwkw, and again I gained 3'ish kw with the airbox removed, 130.8rwkw. So the difference wasn't much at all, only thing was the dyno runs were in totally different temps. The XH and K&N still poses a noticeable restriction, but I think dyno runs back to back would be ideal. I do believe it's better, these sort of mods feel better in the mid range, the car seems to pull harder in higher gears. In theory the XH snorkel is more consistent and larger, but don't expect massive gains. No regrets here though. I've run a SAAS pod for laughs, and it sounds really nice, changed the whole sound of the car, but honestly don't think it was as torquey. Warm / hot air is not condensed, whereas cooler air is. More air for the same volume basically. |
