So i bought an old ea cfi, 3 speed auto, ran like a dog, replaced the plugs and dizzy cap as the plugs were black and the carbon point in the cap was completely gone, now it seems like its over fuelling badly. Lucky to get 1 shot at starting it before it just winds over and stops.

I have checked the injectors and they seem ok but i am dubious about them, i am thinkin it may be a battery voltage issue cos it drained a completely good battery pretty quick with just a few goes at trying to start it. The only reason i am perservering is mainly i want to make it go. The motor is good, only done 170000 and has an ef head put on it.

Was running well until i put the dizzy cap on, then it just started getting worse

then mayb ... cap/leads ..... leads not plugged in fully .... leads broken .... cap broken ... cap centre button.... dunno extent of my so callled xpertese :roll:

if plugs were black before changing,sounds like it was already over fueling - also possible due to fault with carbon brush missing.
check cap is the same as old one ie.contacts in same position in relation to locking clips (have seen incorrect on correct replacement cap before)-while firing order may be correct check that No.1 lead is actually at No.1 position- No.1 plug out block hole with moist paper towel and crank until just blows out then crank slowly by hand in rotational direction to line up timing marks,take cap off and check rotor is pointing at position aligning with No.1 on cap-and then check timing is correct..
check correct fuel pressure & delivery rate -
possible fault in MAP sensor -also check that all earth wires connected at battery-
charge battery and check with multimeter (voltage approx 12volts at rest should hold 9.5volts or higher when cranking and approx. 14.5 volts running affects ECU operation)-
while not a perfect method a timing light aimed at the injectors while running can give indication of injection spray pattern

have you 'nudged' or moved something when changin the cap??
