has anyone thought the bbm might actually increase fuel consumption?

Keep in mind that the BBM is on uber-long runners under 3800 which means the engine is more efficient which means better fuel economy.

i relise that, but what if you don't drive it faster then that? the extra weight isn't justified.

but i see Steady's point

If your into "not needing extra weight" , then take out the back seat when your not using it. It weighs more than an inlet manifold???

but the whole design is better, as for conversion potential, the bbm produces more torque than the log, on an ea, which would hardly ever see over 4-5 grand (excluding P plated vehicles) & doesn't make much if any power over 4000, so my question is, is the bbm switch even needed ? i plumbed mine up to constant vacum merely for more torque over the log.
as for longer runners = better fuel economy, i'm yet to see proof.

Ey?
If the BBM didn't switch, they would make even less power over 3800 :?
The whole point of the BBM is to have more torque down low over the log, while not sacrificing top end..
So if you are willing to sacrifice top end, then no, it doesnt need to switch.

how much power does your average ea-ed make over 4k? & what is the power loss over 4k through longer runners ? anyone dyno'd the difference ?
i bet the asymetrical bbm on long runners would still make more power than the offset tb on the log ?

Just look at the dyno - BBM on long runners has more torque. More torque at the same rpm without an increase in displacement means better volumetric efficiency, which means better fuel economy.

I have, and my ef lost just over 10rwkw on the long runners after 4000rpm

so an ea ?
my gripe is between the log & the long runners, not short runners oposed to long ones, ford did that for a reason i'm guessing....
i'm not fighting the fact that shorter runners make more 'power' at high revs, it's physics, but compared to the log, physics wise it's a bag of s**t. feeding 6 cylinders evenly , 6 ports over nearly a meter length from an offset tb is just not physically possible at high flow.

The BBM is a bag of s**t, or the log is?

sorry the log is. it still serves as a good manifold, just put next to a bbm on long runners is antiquated.
with forced induction it's a moot point.

No common plenum is going to be able to feed an I6 engine evenly as some cylinders are always going to be further away than others. There is no evidence to suggest that the rear cylinders are being starved of air with the log manifold if thats what your asking.
