TROYMAN wrote: are you sure the cam timing is right?? which way is the ignition timing mark going when you rev it? is it going clockwise towards the tdc mark or away from tdc mark? Just pulled the rocker cover off, cam timing is absolutely spot on mate, went by the standard 3 degrees above the head. As for the mark, when i rev the motor the HB mark is going way right ( clockwise ) past the TDC mark on the timing cover, the mark is for some odd reason going very far right, retarding the timing as i'm revving the engine. A few months back when i was revving the motor, the HB mark was going left ( Anti clockwise ), advancing the ignition timing as i rev the motor which is what it should be doing now. I just did a small feel test with fuel pump pressure, i stuck the inlet fuel hose into a bottle and went to prime the engine with just setting the ignition ON, nothing came out, i kept priming and priming and eventually i was getting dribbles and then a flow. I tried cranking the motor with my thumb over the inlet fuel hose to feel the pressure, there was s**t all pressure from the inlet fuel hose, i expected fuel to be pissing out everywhere but there was not much at all. Conclusive to that redneck fuel pressure testing i can't see how the engine can be so inefficient on fuel from lack of fuel pressure!? This may be just as confusing to you, Troyman, as it is to me.

its seems very odd that the ignition timing is doing that..
do you have another dizzy you can try? as for the fuel pressure test, which line are you checking? the one to the rail is the supply, the one to the reg is the return.. |

It's not the dizzy, i've tried 3 different dizzys, one brand new, two second hand and they all didn't make a difference. Yes i'm checking the supply line, is there a possibility that the new fuel filter i bought was dodgy? But yeah i could definitely suck that fuel up faster, the car no longer starts up first kick, just sits there whirring away until the fuel makes it up the line. I don't think it could be a relay? I always thought they were just on / off and i can hear the fuel pump priming... just lack of fuel pressure at the supply line. hmmm Mind you once i changed that Aux shaft it sounds very nice, running on all 6. Just no power.

the fuel pump itself could be just about cactus??
the relay is just on /off so if the pump is working the relay is ok.. I guess it couldn't hurt to check the filter but if its not that it shouldn't give a problem. |

If i were to prime the engine with the ignition being on, when the fuel pump starts pumping fuel to the injectors, how many Litres of fuel should come squirting out. The reason i asked is because only about 200ml came out.
I decided to take off the supply hose BEFORE the fuel filter, i stuck my thumb over the hose and got someone to prime the engine, and i couldn't hold back the pressure, there was fuel bloody spraying everywhere... I reckon the filter is shot, then again, would the filter dim down the pressure going up to the rail...?

Got the courage to do more testing ( Fanbelt is squealing so bad it's embarrassing )
Took it for a drive, normal hesitation and jerkiness, loss of power no surprises, started going up a hill though and my lord did it struggle, down into 1st gear doing 30kmh up this not so steep incline with the fanbelt squealing away like a pig shot in the foot while everyone is staring at me. Going down the hill on the other hand was a different story, not full power but the car wanted to get up and go... I reckon it's the fuel pump. Filter is fine by the way.

Once again, another update with a rather annoying issue.
Changed the fuel pump, it no longer hesitated when putting the foot down. Changed the dizzy cap, got a big increase in power. Car feels fine from 1st gear i put my foot down and she roars up the road and wants to be thrown into second immediately, 2nd gear is alright, throw it into third and there isn't much torque from there up, but hey, that's a work in progress. The real annoyance is the jerking when trying to keep at a constant speed, getting minor power fluctuations with a jerking sensation of the car like it's fuel deprived, which i've just fitted a new pump so it should be fine... It also kinda feels like there are flat spots, i put the foot halfway down and she pulls away no worries... come to the same situation around the corner and there's less power - jerking motion happens again. Mind you the dizzy rotor looks like it has aged quite abit... much of a hassle to change over a rotor?

At work today had test driver remind me of your situation. Mechanic from Toyota drove the car said it was jerking really bad. I took it to the Servo added 20lt, problem fixed, car sold.........

Shouldn't be jerking that bad though, i mean... it's only when i apply light amounts of throttle.
Also the new rotor button didn't do much, maybe a little more power but that's it, still jerkin away. TPS maybe?

That said it's very much so a drivable car now, although it still has weird flatspots where it'll either have no balls or it'll have plenty. Will update if problem is resolved

Can you describe which eec mode the engine is in when you have the problem? Is it only at idle, part throttle, full throttle or a combination of those?

Both part throttle and full throttle. Idle is bad when first starting up, sits at around 100 rpm and picks up to around 500rpm where it's steady.
