Hey guys,
The EA is stuffing up on me again! This time, it sounds like a loose belt, worn pulley or something else along those lines. Both on idle and acceleration, the car makes a low whirring noise, not high-pitched like a slipping belt. It began a week or two ago, but only for a minute or two after start-up. Now it does it no matter what temp the car is at. Any ideas? Might be time to upgrade to thermo-fan. Cheers

Get a big screwdriver with steel that goes right through the handle (or even a piece of round bar but it has to be solid) put it on your ear then against the pulleys, waterpump alt and so on. It will work like a doctors stethiscope (yeah i dont know how to spell it) and you can hear all the bearings and engine internal noises and find out whats wirring then.

Check your PS Fluid levels - Power Steering pumps make a nice whine when they are low on fluid

I wish. Listening to it some more, i'm leaning towards either a worn bearing (as it cuts in and out every second or two and sounds like a dirty bearing) or possibly some sort of air leak somewhere? The car seemed to heat up a little more than usual on the way home too. Don't know if it's related. At first I thought the fan might be hitting something or something rubbing on a belt. I'll go take apart the throttle body (as i fiddled with it the other day) and put it back together to make sure it's not that, then i'll try WD-40 on some pulleys. I'll go the screwdriver trick if that doesn't work and see if i can possibly source it.

By the sounds (and feels) of things, it seems to be the idler pulley closest to the crankshaft pulley. It's vibrating like nuts and that's what seems to be the noise (used the screwdriver trick). Another thing i noticed while looking was that there's a slight tear in the belt on it. I only replaced it maybe 6 months ago! Anyway, what do i do about the vibrating? Tighten it, or there another possibility for why it's vibrating? And how long should a fan belt last?? I thought a couple of years at least!

If the idler pulley is stuffed and vibrating about, that would cause the belt to go to s**t pretty quick. Is it the one for the Aircon ?
I'd replace the bearing and pulley and smash a new belt on. |

My old man just had a look and he thinks it's the crankshaft pulley making all the noise. Time to visit the wreckers and grab another one? Or is there an easier way e.g get it fixed by a mechanic?
EDIT: Possibly harmonic balancer? A mechanic mentioned something about it a few months ago, but said it wasn't urgent. Anyone know what it cost to get one replaced? Don't know if i'm good enough to do it.

You can get a new aftermarket harmonic balancer for $90-100 on eBay at the moment plus postage. To get it off you just need to borrow a puller from someone. Unfortunately, the radiator has to come out for this job.

Damn it! I just pulled most of the radiator apart 6 months ago. Ah well, should i get a mechanic to do it for me, or spend a whole day fixing everything up? Anyone know what it might cost to have someone do it for me? Might replace hoses/belts at the same time.

I'd replace the bearing and pulley and smash a new belt on. Turns out it was this. f**k belt and loose pulley. Paid $150 and got it sorted i no time. Better than the struggles i had changing that belt last time!
