Can someone narrow down the location of the 'earth' strap for me? I was under the impression that if it earths, it does it to the engine block straight through the alt body?

Nope - there should be a lead from Battery -ve to under the exhaust manifold (on the block) - close to the engine mounts.

There should also be a small earth strap directly above the starter from memory.

i swear, if this turns out to be my problem for what ever reason, a d**k earth strap, i'll f**k scream.
where is the best place to get a new one? any way to resurect the old one? best place to fit a new one?

The shortcut below may shed some light on your problem. Yes you can have too many earth connections. This can lead to ground loops were you have current flowing between the earth wires because they all have a different amount of resistance and are connected to different points on the vehicle. My suggestion is to fit good quality wire at the thickest gauge that the car will physically accomodate. Replace one for one. Ground loops can cause interference in your audio equipment.

An extra earth of a heavy guage cabe attached to the cyl head, gives a nice earth for the spark plugs, instead of relying on the head bolts, or the firerings of the head gasket.

Best place to get a new earth strap is your local auto electrician. He will manufacture one to suit and will crimp and/or solder the correct lugs on the block end for you. The battery end will need a new battery clamp and you will also need to fit the connecting body/ecu wires. An auto elec will do this for you at a price. The thicker cable isn't cheap and you also need to pay for his time.
You could get one from a donor car but this introduces the possibility that you may replace one faulty part with another. Most of these wires are damaged from years of heat, oil and corrsion so its a bit of a lottery. Good Luck

The extra earth wires/cables i run on my ED are a Hot earth style setup and has improved sections of my car.

If those extra cables work for you KRUPTD, thats great. If you get any engine whine thru your audio system, consider what I said above. I know that the aircraft I have worked on over the years, ground loops cause major problems if the system isn't carefully designed and constructed. Cars suffer the same problem but not to the same extent.

On my EL the earth goes from the block to the battery then to the chassis. Since i put a battery in the boot it went straight from the block to the chassis. Even though i used very thick cable to the boot i lost about 0.7v on the dash guage. I then put an extra earth cable from the block to the k-frame, and the voltage went back to what it was before. It's normally 13.5 to 14 volts on the dash guage.

By adding an extra ground wire from engine to the k-frame, you have overcome the inability of the existing battery to chassis wire to handle all the chassis electrical loads and charge the extra battery (too much current heating wire causing resistance to increase). Upgrading the - battery clamp to chassis wire(coolant tank bracket) would also achieve the same result. No need to add extra, just increase the thickness of the existing wire.

When i removed the front battery i shifted the battery connector to the coolant bracket and removed paint from the bracket, i didn't just rely on the existing little wire, but i could have paid a tad more attention to cleanliness.
The strap from block to k-frame was easy to do using an existing bolt on the k-frame. The other option would have been to bolt the battery connector to a better place than the coolant bracket, but i couldn't see a nice option.
